Reinstate an open fire in a 1930's house

Hello,

Has anyone reinstated an open fire in their house ? I'm wanting to do this in our new (new to us - built in 1936) house ? The chimney stack and pots are there and there was once a fireplace in the dining room ? I'm not sure if the two are interconnected though as there is no stack in the bedroom above, however I believe the stack goes diagonal across the side of the house and up in the second bedroom in the style of house we have bought (hope that does not sound too daft). The stack does exist in bed 2.

Does anyone know a good builder that would be able to advise and undertake the work ?

Also any ideas of cost ?

cheers

simon.

I have tried to do this on an older house a few years ago. A builder will light a smoke bomb basically to see where the smoke goes. I had trouble because the smoke leaked through to next door's loft space. If this happens you have to concrete line the stack with lightweight concrete made with Vermiculum I think. I believe I got a quote of about £1000. A foil liner for use with a gas fire is a bit cheaper in total, but not much. I think the liner is about £20 a meter from memory....I'm sure someone can give you a better idea of cost.
