steev
What laptop is it? If it's an oldish one, check all fans & air vents.
esme
make sure there is a clear path to the air vents, if you use it on your lap use a tray and not a cushion

martss
Mine used to do this, I downloaded some temperature monitoring software and found out it shutdown at 85 deg C to protect itself. After a bit of looking around I found out there was a process putting a heavy load the CPU, once I'd stopped that it would cool down and run happily at 65 - 67 deg C. Thats the motherboard temp, the hard disk was around 48 deg C. I've also noticed that Google Earth sends the temp up. As other posters have said, always put your laptop on a hard surface so air can circulate.
esme
also Maplins will sell you a laptop cooler that will increase the airflow over your laptop

esme
nope it's big plate thing whith holes in, you put your laptop on it and fans blow air through the holes
xircon
Have you re-installed th OS recently? If so go to the manufacturers website and download everything for that model and install - I nearly fried my brother-in-laws HP lappy by not installing the firmware after a rebuild. His laptop required a proprietary bit of software that was not on the windows 2000 pro disk, it seemed to run the fan HTH Steve
keepgreen2k
maybe watercooling might do the trick http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?TT-BIGWSE But you may need a qualified plumber to carry out the work.
