gabby
There is a vacancy advertised on the job centre website for a machine setter/ operator, and they state that they are 'actively seeking applicants from the Polish UK community/ Polish immigrants.' This isn't a 'bloody foreigners, comin over ere and takin our jobs' rant - if people wanna come over here and work for a better way of life then fine. I was just curious as to whether employers are allowed to specify the nationality/ethnic background of the person they want to employ.
karatemma
i thought you weren't allowed to advertise for a particular sex/race unless is was for a 'female' ladies toilet attendent, or 'chinese staff required' for a chineses retauraunt type of thing...or a themed bar or something where the race of the staff adds to the experience... Cyclone
maybe a bit iffy, but doubt it's outright illegal. If they actually turn down people of other nationality (because of nationality rather than some other reason) then that would probably be illegal. karatemma
maybe its a polish company where the people only speak polish and make...polish things?? fox20thc
You can say you welcome applicants from any particular strand of society.. eg: we encourage applications from ethnic minorities. What you can't do is exclude a particular group unless the post is specific and exempt from the equal opps act. such as counsellor for muslim women. They can say we only want female muslim applicants.

If it's on the job centre website it will have been checked first. Surely?
UKSentinel
Maybe the advertisement was misread. It could have meant Polish people as in Shoe Polishers rather than Polish people from Poland, lol
gabby
Its obvious why they want Poles- people from eastern europe will probably work for a far lower wage than we would. I just couldn't believe the people advertising the job could be so blatant.
