Islamist or Islamic?

Recommended Posts

I've heard the term 'Islamist' bandied about a lot recently by politicians discussing the terrorist threat. However I can't recall ever having heard the word before and I don't understand what the difference is between this and the word 'Islamic'. Does anyone know if there is a difference in meaning? Or where the word 'Islamist' comes from? Is it another piece of terminology invented by Bust et al?

Islamism is the religion of Muslims. One disciple of Islamism is an Islamist or Muslim,

thus it seems Islamist=Muslim? Count me out of the religious aspect! I was only working on the words.

To Islamise means "to convert or subject to the influence of Islam", so an Islamist sounds as though he/she is one such person?

I think that an Islamist is someone who advocates the inclusion of Islamic policies within Politics.

I think this is the correct definition. 'Islamism' refers to a political ideology. The word 'Islamic' refers to the actual religion or associated culture. For example, one could say that the Iranian government is an Islamist institution, whereas Turkey is secular and is its constitution stipulates the rejection of Islamism. It’s true to say that Turkey has some of the best Islamic art and architecture found in the world today.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for this - so an Islamist extremist is someone who wants Islamic principals ingrained into politics, whereas an Islamic extremist is perhaps just someone who has extreme Islamic views, but doesn't necessarily believe they should be mixed with politics?
