chickywiggle
should the roads immediatly surroundign NGH be made residents only parking with 2 free permits per household?? discuss. personally i think YES why should we park miles away from our front doors because NGH staff are to tight to pay to park to get to work. By a bus pass!!
Cycleracer
100% whole heartidly agree, why should you have to park away from your own home. I live quite close to the NGH and don't have that problem but if I did I woud be causing merry hell to move them. Your right, let them get the bus or cycle. cloud
I think the solution here lies with management at NGH. They could solve this problem in an instant by allowing staff to park at NGH for nothing, or minimal cost. They have chosen, however to try to make as much money as they can out of staff and patients families alike. The result is obviously going to be congested parking on surrounding roads. Some staff can use public traansport, but many are working unsociable shifts making public transport unavailable or dangerous. If I lived near the hospital, I too would be annoyed, but my anger would be vented at the mismanagement.

By a bus pass!! you might find if you bother to look into this theres a little more to it than staff just been to tight to pay for a bus pass. still next time you need to come in for treatment and theres a lack of staff ask yourself why ! Ella Sue
As one of the people who parks on a resident street and then walks to the NGH, try and see our point of view for a little while. I drive on average 1h30 to 2hrs in a morning (public transports not an option, it would cost around £20 a day and cycling is out as well. As fit as I am, even I can't cope with 27 miles twice a day.) Anyway it would then cost an extra three pounds a day on top of that for parking. No matter what some people think about students (I'm a med student) we all do not live off Mummy and Daddy. The only reason I have my car is that I moved back to my home village and therefore no longer pay extortionate rent in Sheffield. If the NGH would give me another option I would gladly take it, I do try to be considerate were I park and the street I chose has mainly large houses which each have enough drive space for two cars. I'm sorry if some of you are inconvinienced by staff and some students parking outside your house. Anyway I'm new, nice to meet you all.
joeyannie
I dont think you would get 2 free permits per house if it was made residents only...see the long thread on the broomhill parking scheme for reasons why...basically if people who live around the hallamshire/universities are limited to 1 per household at £35 and then further permits costing more (if allowed at all) there is little chance of the council allowing freebies for other residents schemes. Also they would have to put in some short term pay and display spaces as seen in broomhill...so while it may solve some of your problems, chances are you will be out of pocket for a permit and unable to park 2 cars on your street as you currently can (traffic allowing!). JoeJoe
Unfortunately when you buy a house you do not buy the road outside if you want guaranteed parking where you live you should ensure to buy a house with a drive as this is the only way you will be guaranteed a space, even then in this city of quite selfish people they are likely to park across your drive. I live very close to the city centre and can never park outside my own house as the people living close to us have a lot of taxis and cars and although they also have drives they tend to park their taxis outside our houses and cars outside theirs but then leave their drives empty. Cannot quite understand this behaviour myself but have spent too many hours becoming annoyed by this situation until now I am resigned to the fact that I must leave Sheffield for my own sanity. By a bus pass!! Hmmm, it's not a case of being too tight - there's a haphazard allocation of parking permits (which have to be paid for) so the people who are parking on the streets are those who haven't been allocated! Personally I think there are a lot of people who are just too lazy to not come in their car but there are a few who genuinely need to use it! I also can't park outside my house (not near the NGH) as there's just not enough space. It isn't an automatic right unless, as someone else said, you have a drive... fridgeman
they pay the extortionate road tax , so they are allowed to park almost anywhere apart from in their own car park
