56cheffy
My son is doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award and would like to attend a first aid course....the only one I can find is St Johns Ambulance which meets at the cafe in Graves Park, but it is more than just first aid, more like a youth club and you have to wear the uniform..this is not what he wants...so I'm looking for a course than runs a minimum of 12 weeks..Any help would be appreciated...Thanks. FairyNormal
Sheffield College run first aid courses. They will also come out to your place of work and do it there if there are enough people. We did one at the school I work at and it was free for us to do it. Lee14
I did a week long first aid course at the Source outside Meadowhall. It cost in the region of £140. The guys that run it were fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone. If you work for a large company they may be able to cover fees if you wish to to a First Aid at Work course. zippy
the answer of course like most training queries is what are you prepared to pay or commit in time? the St. John Ambulance units in sheffield will provide free training for members , but the pay back is getting involved in the operational provision of first aid and emergency care at events... this can be useful in terms of the 'service' requirements for DofE. the costs involved in delivering training for St. John Ambulance members are similar to the costs involved in providing training for outside organisations, plus of course the additional training SJA members require to deliver first aid as part of one of (if not the) largest service providers in the UK. incidentially the unit that meets in Graves Park is only there temporarily before moving into the new building on Broadfields lane... if you are prepared to pay St. John Ambulance training services do run a wide variety of first aid courses for both business and general/ 'pleasure' purposes. the First Aid at Work course is relatively expensive, but this reflects the business nature of the course and the extra costs and requirements of HSE approval for First Aid at Work training. The costs also reflect the costs involved in training provision and running the 'business' side of the organisation. the various community First Aid Courses are less expensive (as they only need to cover costs) but probably better suited to the OPs needs , it may ven be possible to organise a course specifically for the OP if there are other Dof E candidates who want / need the course. it is worth bearing in mind that DoFE probably has rules as to what is and isn't acceptable as a first aid course for their purposes - some of the 'free' courses while very very useful and worthwhile in teaching essential emergency life support skills may not meet the requires for DofE.
