wibbles
5 years ago a terrorist attack on the twin towers caused a loss of life to many people. Yet throughout my time there have been countless terrorist attrocities in which loss of life has occured. Why are these past events not commemorated by people to the same degree as the twin tower event?? There are 100's of people die everyday as a result of terrorism and do we hold a minutes silence for them??..or is it because it happened in a country that has a culture similar to ours, and we are constantly reminded about it by news agencies and newspapers to a degree where it gets repetitive and tiresome...it's almost become the norm to have a minutes silence for anything...Ken Bigley being a prime example..a nobody who happily went to Iraq to make a fortune and got killed for it..not a hero by any means. Personally it didn't affect me, I have a life to get on with and I do so but I take offence at being told I HAVE to hold a minutes silence for people that I never even knew or cared about. I respected the event, nay even shed a tear for those lost, but then I got over it and moved on. The people that HAVE been affected by it should be allowed to mourn and remember in their own time and in peace without a Sky News reporter sticking a mic in his/her face and having to watch countless replays/documentaries/conspiracy theories showing the moments they lost a loved one. Where's the nationwide minutes silence for the soldiers who have recently lost their lives fighting a pointless war without a choice and have probably contributed far more than many people who died in the twin tower collapse??? KenH
I think that what happened in 2001 was such a significant event that it changed the world and we should remember it. I think at the same time we should remember the countless people killed by the IRA, often using weapons bought with money from "irish" new yorkers.
