cgksheff
"Today, it's on a mission to tart itself up ..." .... is not the most flattering description, but may be true.
Meaks
An interesting (and amusing) read. Thanks for the link 2wentypence.
Pook
what's 'up' with the 'BBC' website... nearly 'every' other story has pointless apostrophes on it. EG: Palestinians 'strike unity deal' ??? Well did they or didn't they? It's even worse on the science/nature pages. 'Funeral held' for Steve Irwin -why the apostrophes??? clogginchris
This is now on the BBC News Front Page as the 4th most popular story. Nice to see Sheffield getting some positive publicity, but I'm not sure I agree with the commenter from Dronfield!
Blade1983
"As an architectural jewel, Sheffield doesn't take much beating. Starslight
In a way that mucky picture thing wasn't far wrong, and I think it was spot on in that it recognised it was the people and not the architecture which makes Sheffield special. Plain Talker
In days of yore, Sheffield was indeed described as being "a dirty picture in a golden frame". It was to do with the grime of the city itself, half-buried under industry's soot and filth, in stark contrast to the sheer beauty of the countryside surrounding it. For years (and i think they still do it...), the Sheffield Star produced (-es?) the "Golden Frame" calendar, sent by the thousands, to pals, family and ex-pats all over the world...
