what's 'up' with the 'BBC' website... nearly 'every' other story has pointless apostrophes on it.

EG:

Palestinians 'strike unity deal' ??? Well did they or didn't they?

It's even worse on the science/nature pages.

'Funeral held' for Steve Irwin -why the apostrophes???

This is now on the BBC News Front Page as the 4th most popular story. Nice to see Sheffield getting some positive publicity, but I'm not sure I agree with the commenter from Dronfield!

Behind the story of the man from Sudan forced to marry a goat that he buggered.

....which is from February :hihi:

"As an architectural jewel, Sheffield doesn't take much beating. Locals describe it as "a mucky picture in a golden frame","

Don't think I've EVER heard any "Local" describe Sheffield in such a way - F*ing southern jerno's making quotes up!

F- off back to London!

LOL! I agree- never heard that myself. But at least they were more original than the usual take on the 'its grim up north' chestnut, or the Full Monty references.

In days of yore, Sheffield was indeed described as being "a dirty picture in a golden frame".

It was to do with the grime of the city itself, half-buried under industry's soot and filth, in stark contrast to the sheer beauty of the countryside surrounding it.

For years (and i think they still do it...), the Sheffield Star produced (-es?) the "Golden Frame" calendar, sent by the thousands, to pals, family and ex-pats all over the world...
