goldenfleece
Is there any way to STOP Win Xp Pro from closing down/restarting once you, maybe accidentally click OK to a "system needs to be restarted" message following an update? I did this and had a rather busy desktop full of running appplications which were all terminated, and not all of them auto saved what was happening....so once windows starts its shut down process, any way to STOP it? LL200
not too sure if this works, but if you're quick enough, you may be able to start a command prompt and type 'shutdown /a'.

fnkysknky
You gotta be quick though - might be worth sticking a shortcut to it on the desktop or even in the quick launch bar if it's something that happens regular.
Ghozer
I always have notepad open, with some 'unsaved' text, it asks you if you wish to save the document, click cancel and it stops the shutdown but yeah, Start > Run > "shutdown -a" will work.. Shortcut wont work - wont launch bat/com/exe after shutdown has started. Fast fingers is the only way (or a program that wont shut!)
alkatraz
shutdown -a is used to abort a scheduled shutdown.. ie: 'shutdown -s -t 10' schedules a shutdown and halt after 10 seconds which can be aborted with 'shutdown -a' Although if you are seriously quick you might be able to catch a shutdown in progress with it, it is by no means something you can expect to do regularly, by the time you've realised it's shutting down and you don't want it to, it's generally too late. (With the possible exception of Fastest Finger First Style START+R, Return.
