does anyone know how much council flat rent is, and does it vary per house and can anyone get a council flat.

how much would a council flat in hackenthorpe be per week and is there a long waiting list.

and if the rent is so cheap why does anyone rent privatley....i just dont really know much about it

thanks mc

If you go to the city council's choice based lettings site and look at some of the houses for rent i.e. this weeks properties, it tells you how much the rent is. £50-odd is the norm per week. It is incredibly hard to get a council property these days. There isnt a waiting list anymore, you put in a bid. then they look at the person with the most priority or waiting time and give it to them. In some places 15-20 years wait isnt uncommon.

1. See answer above, the rents are available via the Sheffield Property Shop website.

2. Anyone can register for a Council property.

3. Unless you have priority then you will be waiting a long time for a property - although waiting times are usually less for flats. You can do a search on the Property shop website to see how long people have waited to get a flat in the area you're interested in.

4. People rent privately because you can get somewhere straight away, whereas unless you are a priority you'll usually have to wait years to get one from the Council.

check this site out http://www.sheffieldpropertyshop.org.uk/

it depends on size and condition of property, water rates apply and possibly district heating and furnished charges apply if the property has/is.

if your thinking of getting a house via the council you want your name down, you can do this on your 16th birthday but cannot bid till you 18 unless you are a "priority" ie. homeless. the waiting list varies on state to state and i believe 3/4s of the properties are for priorites ie. homeless and disabled. check the site
