Happy Memories of Arbourthorne Pond

My thanks to forum member Hazel, and her sister csider, for being the guests of honour at the Arbourthorne Pond Open Day today. Both of our forum members lived as children at No 427 Arbourthorne Road, which overlooks the pond. csider now lives in Dorset, and Hazel only recently returned to live in Sheffield from Derbyshire. Neither had been back to their childhood home in the past 57 years.

They shared some happy memories of both the Pond and Arbourthorne itself, from when they were children. Their visit proved to be an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

The Organisers of the Arbourthorne Pond Open Day are stalwarts, who selflessly devote themselves to improving the Pond for the benefit of the wider community. My thanks go to Anne & Tom in particular, for making it such an enjoyable time for their special visitors, and to Cosywolf for the presentation of framed photographs and honoury membership of the Sheffield Wildlife Trust. My thanks also to nobikejohn for the group photographs he took - which hopefully will appear with a little story in The Star about two sisters who have some Happy Memories of Arbourthorne Pond.

Thanks Rob for inviting me to attend your fishing pond opening.

It was a beautuful morning in a beautiful setting, thanks to Cosywolf who was there and Jerome, Tom and Anne

A lot of time and love has gone into the creation of a peaceful tranquil spot for Arbourthorners to spend their leisure time. I saw dragonflies, butterflies and wild flowers, the water was reflecting the sun and waterlilies were still flowering. It seemed to me like a Constable setting for his pictures. Tom informs me that there were newts in the pond and plenty of fish. I know that because I saw them being caught.

A lovely day with lovely people

We had a great day, and it was a great event, made even more special by a visit from such lovely, interesting people. Redrobbo, thanks for bringing Hazel and scider, and thank you two for coming - some fascinating stories, and lots of laughter later, I'm still smiling about it.

I know Tom, Ann and the others enjoyed it as much as I did.

Hazel and scider, please share some of your memories with us, they are such wonderful reminiscences.

Sorry tess667. I thought about making an announcement prior to the occasion, but I knew that Hazel and csider would probably be struggling to satisfy the demands for autographs if there were huge crowds around! :)

Everyone had a lovely time, and the gifts of photos, flowers and special membership of Sheffield Wildlife Trust was much appreciated by our guests.

The trips down Arbourthorne Pond memory lane were amazing. Come on Hazel, as cosywolf suggests ...... share some of them on SF with us!

My sister and I

(sounds like the queen doesn't it ) were treat like royal visiters.

Redrobbo drove us round to show how the estate had prospered.

Still the same road names but looking so good. The railings and gates in front of the houses had at long last been replaced after being all cut down in the war to go towards making tanks and guns. They came with a lorry and cutters and piled them high, people came out with saucepans to throw on the lorry to give to the war effort. I think I heard years later that these piles of metal were never used and lay untouched for years. The estate looked superb in the sun that morning. Redrobbo has reason to be proud of it.

You have heard the tale of coal kept in the bath ( which I know was true ) well Tommy Greensmith our neighbour kept the fish he caught in the pond in his bath and once when as a child I went to see, there was a duck swimming merrily there. Don't ask when he had a bath.

My sister and I went back the next day to spend time there contemplating how it all was now and how it had been then, during the war bombs falling Town on fire which we could see from the back garden of Arbouthorne Rd and the pond still there in spite of mans inhumanity to man and still it lies tranquil and beautiful thanks to a lot of hard work.

I'll cetainly be back there again
