d71146
I was having a look in the Apple shop in Meadowhell today and must say I liked the selection of Apple Mac computers on display has anyone got an Apple Mac and what are the good and bad points against say a Windows Xp type computer. blagtastic
As someone who provides professional support to both mac and pc I would definately recomend a mac. Macs are superb machine. Although usually more expensive they look better and in my experience work better. Security issues aren't so much of an issue. As popularity of the mac increases which it almost certainly will then OSX will become a target but it is generally inherently more secure as its based on unix. Make sure you buy an Intel mac (most of them are now). This way you can dual boot with windows if you need to run some software that is only available for Windows. Apple have just upped the minimum specs of the iMac so now is a good time to buy.
sallonoroff
As a Mac user, it is my obligation to recommend the Mac.... But seriously, they are very good computers. The hardware is top-spec and of excellent build quality (in PC laptops, i'd say only ThinkPads and Vaios could match them - in PC desktops, i'd say Sony again...) Mac OS X is an excellent OS, and out-of-the-box gives you just about everything you'd need for general home/personal use. As for them being 'expensive', i don't think they are that much more anymore. The latest iMac is a fantastic price for the spec and the Macbooks offer excellent value too. I think the only down points for having a Mac are if you prefer non-legit solutions for your software... +
evildrneil
As a user of Mac, Linux, Windoze and Solaris I would say they all have their place! Mac -> good out of the box product which provides both a good WIMP environment but with an underlying BSDish shell for if you want to get your hands dirty. Good enough that I'm considering ditching my linux partition in favour of my macbook. Made even better by the fact that it's comparatively easy to port *NIX applications to OSX so much of the stuff coming out in the open source arena has OSX binary releases. Linux -> fiddlier to install and opperate than Mac or Windoze but once you have learnt your way round it, it pays you back handsomely in terms of increased productivity. An ever increasing quantity of software is available (sourceforge and freshmeat are both good places to get Open Source software from) however given the origins of the *NIX operating system these tend to be more scientific applications rather than business or games (which isn't to say you can't get good business and games applications of course!) Solaris -> just another variant of *NIX so most of the above applies. Windoze -> As you may guess not my fave environment but easy to use and ubiquitous which causes both problems (favoured target for virus writers et al) and benefits - the main one being the sheer range of software available - if you want lots of software options and particulalry lots of games then get something that runs Windoze! Yeah, that's why i love it... the comfort of a GUI, with the option to play about in UNIX if you need/want to. (BTW, I'll just add, i do use Windows and Solaris too... So i do know what the 'competition' is like! )

sallonoroff
you can now install Windows XP on it! Not that you'd want to once you've tried OSX! +
JRRT
The good news is if you buy a Mac you can now install Windows XP on it! So you'll be able to infest your Mac with all those lovely viruses. Ain't progress wonderful?
clogginchris
I'm a mac user too (although I work in IT in a very PC based environment so have experience of both). Macs are much better machines with an excellent operating system. They work out of the box, don't have the same security problems as PCs and are great at handling home media (photo's, movies etc) The downside is the range of games software available for them. If you're not interested in that go for a mac every time. And boy, do they look better!
