artisan
I have just unearthed the above mentioned record, bought in Aus in 1973. You can tell how old it is, it says in the blurb, that Bernard is 18 stone! People on it are Frank Carson Bernard Manning Charlie Williams Jos White Colin Crompton George Roper Steve Faye Mike Burton Stu Francis Ken Goodwin Duggie Brown Sheps Banjo Boys Credits on the sleeve range from the 'Sunday Telegraph' to the 'Morning Star' So they had a pretty wide range of audience! :hihi:

artisan
For me its got to be Les Dawson. By God yes Les Dawson, he got better and better as time went on. Wasnt he first on TV on one of those 'discovery' type programmes with Hughie Green or someone?
peterw
For me its got to be Les Dawson. Saw him in Blackpool and yes, he was a great comedian, very dry. Early in his career I went to interview at his home which was then in Bury. He looked at me — I weighed about 16 stones then — and said: “We’d make a couple of good book-ends.” But he was never a stand-up and joke, joke, joke comedian like Ken Dodd. BREAKING NEWS: I think I’ll also rate Tony Blair after tonight’s tv news. He was greeted by tumultuous applause in Jerusalem, and off-the-cuff remarked: “I’ve not gone yet!” Superb! peterw
I would, like peterw echo the talents of Ken Dodd, a magnificent performer, and for me the best comedian in Britain. I think this man is a national treasure. Comedy, and his wide range of gags seem to ooze easily from his mind during his performances. The "Diddymen" characters brought his act to the notice of the children too. His singing voice and choice of recordings also made him well-loved with the older people in our society. I was brought up listening to radio of course. I used to love it when Al Read came on. Also I will never forget "Ron and Eth" in the radio shows with Jimmy Edwards......perhaps outside the scope of this thread remit though. As time has passed, I still think the media of Radio still suits a comedy act much better that TV. Have you ever seen his ‘vent’ act? Absolutely superb and very, very funny! He’s included it in his An Evening With performance, but I’ve seen him do it for 45 stomach-aching (with laughter) minutes.

Cant believe you interviewed him.You lucky devil.!! You must have been a reporter at the time, because Im sure he wouldnt let anyone interview him.No I dont like Ken Dodd, hes too "old fashioned" for me.Cant explain it,just like the comedians with a dry sense of humour,Les Dawson, Joan Rivers,Robin Williams,Jack Benny and Bob Hope.Cant stand those "Diddy Men" of Dodds. They say he puts an excellent live show on though.
