beamer
My mum had surgery for Carpel Tunnel yesterday. Today her fingers are quite swollen and she has said the strange feeling is still in her fingers and the knumbness is still there!! If anyone has had this op done you will know what she means by "the strange feeling" I am wondering if anyone can tell me if this is normal to have the same feeling after the surgery as she did before and if so how long does it last for? I am a little concerened.

I am a little concerened. I have RSI, the strange feeling is very odd it's sort of numbness/tingling/paralysis all at the same time. It's caused by compression of the nerves in the wrist, which will of course be happening after the surgery due to the swelling. I would suggest it's nothing to worry about and the surgeon really should have warned her. She could try taking ibuprofen if she is able. If it is very painful or is still swollen after a few days she should get herself to the doctors, but moderate swelling is totally normal for a few days, even weeks, after surgery. beamer
Yes she is taking ibuprofen. Thanks for that Twiglet i'll see if she does comment about still having the strange feeling after another 5 days or so and then take it from there. Thanks once again. fnkysknky
I developed carpal tunnel syndrome for a week or two a few years ago - just woke up one morning and couldn't feel or move my hand. Probably due to banging it or something at work so the tissue in the carpal tunnel swells up and puts pressure on the median nerve which causes the numbness. So to answer your question - yes it will be normal as the tissue will still be swollen from the op. Should go down in a week or so. Feels very weird until it does though

Mums been very bad with hers she tried to put up with it for as long as she could, until she couldn't bear it any longer. I think the best thing she can do is give it a few more days,I just suppose she is wonder if the op has worked or not with her having the same feelings in her fingers as before. I will post in a few days, when she has given time for swelling to go down alittle. Thankyou for your reply.
fnkysknky
There's next to no spare room in the carpal tunnel so only needs a little swelling to cause the numbness. It was quite freaky when I woke up and couldn't feel it - made work a good laugh anyway, trying to dig with one hand
