debhorton01
I'm not sure I should be asking, as I am a new member who doesn't even live in Sheffield (I'm from the other side of the Pennines), but I did a search to find a discussion about plumber's charges and wondered if anyone could tell me if a quote for replacing an electric shower with a 10.8kw Mira Sport shower and rewiring to cope with the higher wattage should be in the hundreds or thousands of pounds. I have received a quote for just over £2000 and am shocked it is so high. Thanks in anticipation.
cube
You could get your house fully re-wired and a new shower for that price.
artisan
Get some more quotes. He either doesnt want the job, or the shower is solid gold £2000 for less than a days work! Nice work if you can get it.

What you need to remember is that Sheffield is basically a ‘cheap’ city; no disrespect intended. Read the Forum and you’ve find most people who want something need it free, cheap or for a minimum cost. Whatever prices you get on this Forum refect Sheffield prices and not those in the Manchester area where most people will pay a good price for a good job. My advice is to shop around locally and take the best offer. Having said that, I think £2,000 is over the top. £1,200 might be nearer the mark. Barter a bit, and most tradesmen will drop their price to get the job.
Herbaliser
£1,200 might be nearer the mark. We got our place rewired (inc. new circuit board) for a 10.5 shower- that cost £600 (inc VAT). We paid £950 for a full cubicle installation (which involved moving a toilet and sink) so if the OP is just having a replacement, £1200 all in sounds about right, maybe even on the steep side. Zaytsev
In answer to the original post, without knowing exactly what has been quoted for I would say yes, £2000 is high. From the wording of your post I am assuming that this is a straight swap for an existing shower with no other work required other than supplying and fitting the shower, shower consumer unit, new pull cord switch and wiring. peterw
Have you been at the sherry trifle again Peterw. Begining to realise what the 'W' stands for now. Whisky might be nearer the mark. I have one every night, and in my old age I’ve started smoking (cigars) after 40+ years of abstinence. And anyway, it’s a ‘w’ not a ‘W’. Having thought about it, I might change it to ‘www’ — worthy working what-not.
Strix
er, what power is your current shower, and what size is the cable? Do you already have the separate rcd fuse in your fuse box for it? How far (and how complex) is the cable run from the fuse box to the shower location? You can contact Mira with your existing shower details, and they can tell you which shower would make the best replacement, as different showers have different entry points for electric and water, so their info will keep your costs down If you're in a 2 up and 2 down, 2k sounds like you're either going to get ripped off, or they don't really want the hassle of this job
