Anyone had a gastroscopy?

Recommended Posts

As the title asks, has anyone here had a gastroscopy?

I'm finally having one on Monday and am a wee bit nervous. I'm nervous about the procedure even though I am assured it's not that bad really and am worried about what the results might be.

So if you've had a gastroscopy, was it as bad as I think it will be and did they tell you your results there and then?

Thanks

I was attached to a gastro unit last year and saw my fair share of gastrocopies . Most patients said that once they swallowed the camera, it was fine, and there weren't any problems in any of the ones I saw. However, if you're REALLY worried, you could ask to be sedated, but you'll have to take someone else with you to get back home.

Hope that helps and good luck.

ps the consultants are lovely!

I had one at the Hallamshire a few years ago, and they routinely give you sedation - I'd recommend it, because I remember nothing about the procedure! I remember lying on the trolley and the nurse putting a mouth guard in to protect my teeth, then the next thing I know, I'm lying in the recovery room.

If you have the sedation you do have to take someone with you to take you home afterwards. They did give me the results there and then, and the person accompanying you has to be with you when they tell you, in case you forget what they've told you because of the effects of the sedation!

I was going to opt for the throat spray as I need ot be ok to fetch my son from school later that day.

You probably wouldn't be able to have the sedation then, as I don't think you can drive until the next day, and they tell you not to make any important decisions - probably being in charge of children would count as important!

If they find anything nasty do they tell there and then?

It depends. They may see obviously normal tissue, or they may want to take samples to investigate further. But don't take a lack of result on the day as meaning anything negative. They like to have clinical meeting these days, and to be sure before deciding the diagnosis, if there is one.

As helenbean said, you’ll be fine:)

You should read some of my posts. I have one every year & one up the jacksy too. I did try without the sedation but no way would I try again. What I would suggest is take some-one with you just in case. Try without sedation as you are in & out straight away. If once they start you can't manage they won't pin you down, just tell them you would like sedation. Although you,re not totally asleep you will not remember any of it afterwards. But you do have to rest for the rest of the day & have to have someone with you.

As for results it depends whose ordered the procedure.

You would probably be fine walking to school but make sure someone is with you. You will be adviced to get a taxi with someone or get someone to drive you home after sedation.

Although I must say as soon as I've come round after a sedation I do follow the rules given but have never had any problems or felt any differently, I suppose they have to cover themselves.
