katy1981
hi there my sister has said i can have her old car its an oldish nova only problem is its MOT has run out, she says the engine is sound but she suspects there may be a problem with the drive shaft (dont ask me i have no idea what this is:confused: ) anyway my question is is the drive shaft thingy a big deal? she says as you turn the steering wheel left it makes a clicking sound so do any of you know if this is a big/expensive problem to fix? thats if thats the only thing it needs doing to it thanks in advance
donkey
It could be one of a few things. You'd need someone to diagnose what the problem is exactly. It could be a cheap repair or the start of something serious and expensive.
Bloomdido
If it is the drive shafts, they can be picked up from breakers via an online search. Ask your garage if they can be checked prior to fitting and how much they would charge to fit them. It would be better to put it thru a test though just in case there are other things wrong with it. Andy78
I'm not sure about the cost, but the drive shaft doesn't have anything to do with the steering wheel. The drive shaft is for transferring the power from the engine to the wheels. If it was broke, the car wouldn't go. Unless there's anything wrong with the way the car actually steers, then it may not be a big problem. Still, it's worth getting checked out though. Most garages should be able to give you a quote before carrying out any work.

Trickle
Get the garage to diagnose the problem before putting it through an MOT as it will only fail and you will have to pay for the 2nd MOT since the recent changes to the procedures. If its a ball joint and *if* the rest of the car is in good nick, then its worth doing as its a free car. Otherwise there are better old bangers out there for available pocket change. littlebasher
As above, likely to be the universal joint on the driveshaft... If its only clicking and not knocking, personanally i would ignore it. Its unlikely to fail an MOT or cause any problems. You may want to get someone to check the coil spring hasnt snapped either- not uncommon on Novas BTW, changing a driveshaft is a pig.. Novas are getting scarce now, so you would probably have to buy a reconditioned one anyway, probably about £35 each...Then, as i said they aint easy to change and its a messy job
