Bereavement and Sheffield

Hi

Nine months ago I started a national campaign to help people who have suffered bereavement. I am Sheffield Born and Bred and what has shocked me is the lack of support from my home city. People down south and in Scotland have responded in their hundreds. Yet there is virtually no response shown from Sheff. Can anybody explain why we are so scared of the topic of bereavement/death? it comes to us all in the end!

We have promoted in florists in the area and used numerous posters. We have contacted local support groups and bereavement related organisations.

We have a link on the main bereavement site in the UK, yet Sheffield has not responded at all!

Well, it might well be that we've not heard of it here.

I have to say that my own experience with bereavment counselling soem years ago was that it didn't help me much; however, I'm not sure whether that was me or them. :)

As for being scared of bereavement and death, I'm not sure it's valid to draw that conclusion. One thing I've noticed on SF is that people discuss the topic of their own bereavements quite openly. My own attitude is that death is part of life, and it's nothing to be frightened of - just part of the process. I've had a number of experiences over the years where I've probably come quite close to checking in with the man upstairs, and am quite happy to discuss it.

I'd hate people who are bereaved or concerned with their own mortality to consider themselves 'victims' in any way in desperate need of help. After all, the very nature of being alive is such that one day we die. To be able to confront your own death, or the death of a loved one, with a sense of a life well lived is, to me, the most important issue of how we confront and live with death.

Hello Pat as stated on the website all net profits are split equally between the seven charities. We cannot put an exact figure as obviously it varies from quarter to quarter, but we have an agreed minimum donation set up with the charities which is approx. 60% of sales price. As for running a commercial company, I work for a fundraising partnership. A commercial company sounds like an organisation that would make profit out of this campaign!

Thanks for your interest.
