viking
Xp professional was already on this PC when my other half had it built. I am now getting a warning that it is illegal. I have now purchased a new and legal windows XP Home edition. Question is: Will i lose all my data (Music, photo'sm excel files etc) if I install it? OR: How can i install and register it without losing data?
BluePolo
You won't lose a thing if you do a regular backup. Anything can happen at any time to your pc and cause you to lose it all, so do one now.

BluePolo
When I've done re-intallations myself, everything has had to be reloaded from my backups due to windows insisting on formatting the drive.

torin8
In a word - yes. Backup all that you can.
Cyclone
windows doesn't normally insist on formatting the drive, so normally you would not loose your information. That said, your computer could die in the next 10 seconds, so you really should have everything important backed up anyway. I believe that it should be possible to simply reregister the copy you have installed with the key for the one you have purchased anyway, this will save you the trouble of reinstalling. But arrange some sort of backup anyway.
cha00kaw
Just use the files and settings transfer wizard would be the best bet i think, start>accessories I think. Mke sure you choose the option that it is the old computer. Its better than a regular backup as you'll keep your email accounts etc whilts also backing up your My Documents folder and any others you may set. If you have more than one hard drive/partition it should make it easier as well, failing that you can burn to cd/dvd Then on the new install of XP just run the wizard again. BluePolo
He won't be able to register it with the key he has due to the new key being for XP Home rather than Pro. I think a new installation is the only option.
