Advice Needed Over Car Insurance & No Claims Bonus

My brother had all his documents destroyed by his ex wife during a messy divorce, including his car insurance documents. His wife was the one who dealt with the household admin, so he has no idea who his last insurer was, and has now lost twelve years no claims bonus.

 

Is there any way he can find out which company insured his car?

I can't possibly see how he could have gained 12 years no claims bonus of his own without knowing who he was insured with.

He could have been insured for 12 years and not claimed, hence knowing he had 12yrs ncde.

 

The only people who would might would be the MID (motor insurance database) who have details of all cars insured and where the policies are.

I'm not sure who's name it was insured under. From what he was saying, finding the name of the last company insuring them was pretty vital to claiming - they'd not long since changed companies when they'd split up.
