tom_common
Yo Sheffield is in the Times today. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,585-2342285_2,00.html It's an article about the Venice Biennale that starts this weekend. Jeremy Till (genius architect) has put together a show based on why Sheffield is an amazing city despite its architecture rather than because of it. It's on a whole anti-city vibe, people first. It's good. I think the article is spot on. Sheffield, in it's haste and desperation to be AS Good As Leeds, is just getting nicer, safer, blander. This city needs some vision, because right now it hasn't got any. I love it, but the new city they've building is mediocre when it should be amazing. But the future sounds good from a London perspectivve. Sometimes we can't see it here. We've just got to keep fighting. Be brave. Clench fists. PS all those quotes are Hydro, not me. But we've been mixed up so often now that we've become the same person anyway.
jimmy
Good article and so true. We are just building a load of mainly non-descript "luxury apartments" and office blocks. Great.....
Unisol
Good article and so true. We are just building a load of mainly non-descript "luxury apartments" and office blocks. Great..... If you check out the skyscrapercity.com forums, you'll find that's not true. Sure there are plenty of apartment blocks going up, but there are also many office blocks/conversions etc. I think the quality in design is improving all the time. For example, V1 and City Lofts towers. The NRQ looks pretty smart in the illustrations i've seen too. Where are all the positive people?
jimmy
I do read the skyscraper forums on a daily basis. I did say "mainly". It's not just the quality of construction, it's what they are for. Once we had little artisan manufacturers in towns and places for individuals to start their own businesses/small shops. Now it seems that most residential blocks have huge empty areas below that could only be filled by the Nandos/Rileys/Wetherspoons of the world. I know what you mean - i mean look at that crappy Cafe Rouge in such a prominent spot! Maybe the Leopold Sq development will allow for something a little more interesting? kipper
I'd like to see them do something quick with the cooling towers then as last week the demolition blokes were adseiling down the towers getting ready to fit the bangers.
