We’re thinking of showing a film before the next Quoi de Neuf? at the Forum on the 28th, but can’t decide which one as yet we’ve come up with ‘La Haine’, ‘Taxi’ (the ace French original not the excretable remake) and ‘Ghost Dog - the way of the Samurai’ but can’t really decide which to go for.

Anybody got any preference for any of the above or any better suggestions?

La Haine, Great film. 12 years on and what has changed

Well I expect the rioters' mobiles will be much smaller, the style of their clothes rather different, the cars they torch will be better made and importantly from my selfish point of view they have a much greater selection of ace French hip hop to listen to.

Socio-economically & politically so far as I’m aware not much has changed.

Is it a limited choice to the ones above? If not what about "Ma 6T Va Cracker" , or "Comme un Aimant", ?

No, they're just the ones that we've thought of so far & which I also happen to have on DVD. Must confess I've not heard of either of the films you mention, what are they like?

iirc Akhenaton did a very dramatic (but very difficult to dance to) track called 'Comme un Aimant' on the 'Raptour a l'ecole' compliation.

They are all on a par to me, but in the context of where its going to be shown, I'd say La Haine, as its got stronger music links (in my opinion).

I'm not sure about La Haine which is a certainly a wonderful film but I'm not sure it will really set people up to have a fun night, oddly I don't associate it all that much with hip hop though loads of other people do.

To me that association is strongest with Taxi which turned me back onto french hip hop, which I'd got into somewhat when I worked in France only to forget about almost entirely once I got back home to my beloved indie collection.

Its certianly a tricky one...I think commercially speaking more people associate La Haine with French hip hop more if not just because of the DJ scene & the scene were the guy is spinning on his head, but maybe less people will know of taxi and so will more likely come and watch...it is certainly the more light hearted of the two!! I think whatever film you choose, I agree its got to set people up for the rest of the night.

You could of course just go slightly off the beaten track and go with something random by Jeunet & Caro...no? oh okay!
