Guest Posted September 4, 2006 Share Posted September 4, 2006 If there's anyone who didn't buy the first edition of the new knitters' magazine 'Knit Today', but would like a copy of the Beginner's Guide to Knitting Booklet that came with it, let me know and I'll send you mine. (Sticks and Stringy stuff) but i couldnt get them because i was in a rush and had my delicate little hands full. (excuses escuses) I WILL go back to town this weekend and I MIGHT get them, even though the needles were...18? I finally have time so im going to get stuck in. Possibly... Heard it all before . 18 what, by the way? New needles are generally sized in mm, and if they were 18mm, then they're too thick for a beginner. You want 5 mm or 6 mm. Thicker doesn't necessarily mean easier to handle, even if your hands are big. It tends to lead to having trouble handling them at the same time as the yarn, especially when making the purl stitch. That's what I find anyway. Then again, I have small, girly hands. Ok When i go back ill look for some slimmer ones, I really want to knit something for my new offspring once its out of the petri dish. In that case, you'd probably be wise to start with something like a simple blanket, where the prettiness comes from the yarn and not to any fancy shaping etc. I love knitting baby things. If you want anything knitting, just let me know. I've got some really gorgeous patterns too. I seem to be losing patience as i get older and my fingers seem to be losing the sense of touch. I AM going to keep trying though, even if my shrieks of inept frustration drive my entire neighbourhood insane. Thanks for the offer of the knitting baby things, but my other halfs mother (Spit Spit) is knitting something as is her sister who has one of those machine things. A heirloom blanket would be a lovely idea. Many baby blankets tend to feature quite a lot of lace stitches. They're not too difficult, but definitely not for a first project. Rooty has recently finished a baby blanket. There are photos in the 'pictures of what we're working on' thread, I think. It's a simple, elegant blanket in soft white yarn. It was the project that started this group actually, as Rooty asking for help on the stitches prompted me to ask Geoff to set up the group.
