Windows Firewall - much cop?

the SP2 firewall is not that bad but it only moniors incoming traffic so it will not monitor or block outbound traffic.

It is also not wise to use 2 firewalls together so if you want to have the option of blocking outbound traffic then you will need a 3rd party firewall like Outpost.

Windows Firewall is an improvement over the old Internet Connection Firewall, but only marginally.

The two biggest drawbacks are it does not block outbound traffic, and it can be switched off by another application.

Windows Firewall, however, filters only incoming traffic, allowing any application to send outbound packets.

IMHO falls well short of the standard of protection expected from free or commercial firewalls, get yourself a router with a NAT firewall, and if you need a free software firewall.

PS I prefer just to use a hardware firewall, don't use a software firewall.

I'd agree with Savannah - I run a hardware firewall on the router, but still keep the XP / SP2 firewall running on the two XP machines at The Towers. I regard the hardware firewall as professional soldiers, and the XP one as 'Dad's Army'. :)

I don't need a router (I don't think I do anyway) as I'm not a wireless type - I'm at a loss for free firewalls other than Zone Alarm. And I need to avoid conflicts with other devices (like the Nintendo DS  ).

I use a router, and it's hardwired....didn't think people still used modems ...hehe

Some free firewalls.

Cool, thanks for that. I'll have to look into what works best for me, and I've not heard of half of them.

RE modems: I don't get it, I thought routers were just for setting up home networks - so are modems ye olde technologie now?
