Anybody know why there was a large police presence on Herringthorpe Valley Road today? When we drove past this afternoon there were several police vehicles plus forensic team all gathered round a taped off bungalow.

Beaten body found in house fire

Police have started a murder inquiry after a woman's badly beaten body was discovered by firefighters tackling a blaze at a house in Rotherham.

The body of a 75-year-old woman was found in a bedroom of the bungalow in Herringthorpe Valley Road on Sunday.

Post-mortem tests showed she had multiple injuries to her upper body.

Police said the woman's killer or killers were probably blood-stained and appealed for people to look in their bins for any dumped clothes.

Stranger visit

Det Supt Carl Sturgess, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We're appealing to anyone with information to come forward, especially those who might have seen someone visiting the bungalow yesterday [sunday] or on Saturday.

"We'd also like to hear from people living in the area who might have had strangers call at their door in the last few days.

"Finally there's the possibility that the offender or offenders were heavily blood-stained, so if anyone has seen someone like this or found any clothing or other articles that are heavily blood-stained we'd urge them to contact the police.

"We'd like people to check their dustbins for any such items."
