Smithster
Windermere and Ambleside are really nice places to visit. Also Keswick has some stunning mountain scenery. I can't really tell you about any pubs because I don't know any I'm afraid. I've been to Whitehaven for work before but there's not much there really. But will be travelling around though. Whatever you do, don't visit the pencil museum......that has got to be th most boring thing ever. My other halfs cousin lives up there and we visitied lots of lovely pubs which I can't remember the name of but he will. I'll post them when he gets in. artisan
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/results.shtml/county/Cumbria/ A few pubs listed on here. Should keep you busy I think the best place to base is in Grasmere. Lots of easyish walks around there. If you dont fancy climbing you can boats on Windermere an Ullswater. Dont forget your mint cake and gingerbread
Mel's Mum
The nicest place which is in close proximity to Whitehaven is probably Keswick but, as has been said already, Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere are all nice spots. If you like scenic drives, try Hardknott and Wrynose Pass which goes through the Langdales and has a nice pub called the Sticklebarn Inn at one end or Kirskstone Pass between Ambleside and Ullswater which has the Kirkstone Pass Inn halfway over. For more details of traditional pubs, try googling for CAMRA which should give details of pubs which sell real ale in that area.
feargal
You can spend a nice few hours in Whitehaven if you like Georgian harbour-type stuff! There's also St Bees just down from there which is a nice village with a beach and good pub. I love it up there - I was there last weekend, but didn't get to do very much.
