Belinkabelle
Hi base2001 I went to Prague for 5 days in January of this year. It's a beautiful place with fantastic architecture, culture and history. From your post I guess that's not what you're looking for though eh? Everyone always says how cheap the place is, but prices are definitely rising as more hen/stag parties go out there. The locals are catching on! Still, it's certainly far cheaper than over here, especially the food (wholesome and filling but pretty bland). I found that if you stay off the beaten track a bit you'll find prices far cheaper. If you insist on eating at McDonalds and the like, or drink imported alcohol you will pay for it (perhaps in more ways than one!). On a plus side, absinthe is dangerously cheap over there. You get a 150ml bottle for about £3-4, same price as a shot over here! If you're willing to mix with the locals you'll save a lot of cash, so I'd say beware the usual tourist traps. There are plenty of clubs and pubs that target Western Europeans and are pretty pricey as a result. I also found that not a great deal of people had much grasp of English (and why should they?), although you might not find that in high season. The Czech language is notoriously hard, but if you can speak a bit of French or German you'll be fine. My French got me by most of the time. Look out for the 'Prague Post' whilst you're over there, an English-speaking newspaper. It's full of useful info about listings and activities etc. The area around Wenceslas Square was rather tacky in my opinion. You get your usual prostitutes/drug dealers/conmen around there (and no, I'm not assuming - I was warned countless times about this from locals!). It's also where you'll find most of the Brits making complete fools of themselves. I didn't feel unsafe anywhere though, just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. Watch out for pickpockets though, they'll often work in groups, targetting Westerners. If someone says you have something on your jacket or whatever be very wary as whilst you check someone might nick your wallet. My last tip, don't go in the winter. It was -15C whilst I was there, yikes!
aNTAcid
If your up for a cheap drinking holiday go somewhere else in Czech Republic, as city centre prague has got a lot more expensive since they joined the EU, still not bad though. We went to Jablonec (north of prague) to DJ earlier this year and that was ridiculously cheap. Oh and if you go to a bar don't eat the nuts on the table, they're not free and they may cost you more than the beers do
muddycoffee
The prices of drinks in prague are expensive, but meals in restaurants are extremely cheap. As beautiful as Prague is it has been spoiled by its commercial success. Often you can hardly move on the pavements due to the amount of tourists. It has gone the same way that amsterdam did. If you want a great weekend with cheap drinks go to krakow, in poland. They have the best basement bars I have ever found in europe, and it is really cheap, and the people are lovely.
