"I didn't know you cared" - Sheffield filming locations?

Recommended Posts

There were a few scenes set in a works, and I think these were filmed at Rabone Chesterman off Ecclesall Rd, behind the Pomona. I'm not sure if the works are still there. I seem to remember they were either demolished or converted to offices. I'm sure someone on the forum will know!

Sorry, just reread the original post, please ignore these ramblings!

Algy

Thanks for the confirmation. It was the Bow Works which indeed housed Rabone Chesterman - I presume it used to be located where the car dealerships or EDS are now off Ecclesall Road?

just got the 3rd series on dvd. The billiard hall used was on cambridge st across from the city hall (faulkners i think) where the trendy bars (sorry dont know there names )are now. I can remember the Myrtle Pub being used for some scenes (now gone), the Porter Cottage on Sharrowvale Rd, and the pubs (now long gone) on Pamona St across from Rabone Chesterman works.

I was told the excecutive type home Pat was after, and took the family to see was in Dronfield Woodhouse (which collapsed down the mine shaft).

The bowling greens where Uncle Moat, played the reluctant bowling match for the hand of Mrs Macclesfield, were at Hillsbrough Park.

Carter and Pat were replaced with different actors for the 3rd series, but seeing the series again, after all these years does give a brief insight into how the city has changed during this time. Coming from Heeley, where i know a lot of the scenes were filmed, is the image of boarded up houses awaiting demolition, and the flattened sites all over the city as it was then.

They used Masboro station in Rotherham I think.

Thanks puskas - When I watched episode 1 of series 2 there was a station that I didn't recognise - I thought it might be Dore - but Masborough certainly fits from what I've seen of pictures on the web.

Cheers Fosy - I really appreciate these details. I wouldn't mind taking some pictures of the locations how they look now, but like you say so much has been demolished and rebuilt that it might prove to be a tricky task. One of the next things on my list was locating the bowling green - so thanks for that.

I didn't realise until recently that the new actress that played Pat from the third series onwards, Liz Goulding, was married to Peter Tinniswood.

Are all the series available then? If so I'll have to get them. Uncle Mort is one of the funniest characters I've ever seen on British TV. I remember the earliest episodes being the funniest though and it tailing off a bit towards the end. But viewing them now I bet they'll all seem really good. We still say 'Good God, Carter' (and many other phrases) in our family, it's part of local folkore.

Continuing my search of locations, can anyone out there help me identify where these scenes, taken from the series, were shot?

1. Cemetary (though it could be a made-up set)

2. A pub in Sharrow, presumably no longer there, but I can't make out the name

3. A new housing estate (new for 1978 anyway)

4. A canal lock, perhaps near where Meadowhall is now?

5. Finally, two scenes containing factory buildings, canal and railway

and

I reckon this should prove an easy task!

Isn't number 2 The Porter Cottage on Sharrow Vale Road?

Looks like it. If so, it's still there.

number four, the canal lock picture ...

look at the bridge in the pic, next door to the factory-lookiing building, that's where the tram runs under, just before the meadowhall-south/ tinsley stop.

you can see the coolong-towers, and the viaduct.
