SHsheff
My entire Inbox including folders and everything....! It's not exactly an ideal situation. Presumably, the beast will have them stored somewhere out of my sight and reach? Can it really just 'lose' everything just like that? What (if anything) can I do to get them back? Is this The End? Thanks, guys.
Phanerothyme
Can you give us more information? Operating system - Mail client etc? If it's outlook or outlook express you may be out of luck.

Not good, in that case, 'cos yes it was OE. I've a couple of other options which I'll explore then before taking up your time further (now I know the situation is Not Good), just to see if I've other options that might come to my rescue first. Thanks for the response, Phan.

SHsheff
have you checked that you havent accidentally archived your inbox to a .pst file or something... Sadly - I'd love to think it was user-error cos that would be easily remedied by One Who Knows - the laptop was making mechanically-clicking noises just before it all happened. One doesn't have to be an expert to know that that's Not Good. Pesky things!!!!
GrinderBloke
...the laptop was making mechanically-clicking noises just before it all happened... Not the end of the world but I suggest you backup any valuable data before the disk completley fails As for recovery, the sooner you look at recovering the data the better your chances of getting it back. Guess you have already run scandisk on the disk? Grinder
MickM
If you were using Outlook Express go to search and look for *.dbx, your inbox/sent items should be stored in Inbox.dbx and Sent Items.dbx respectively. It's possible that for some reason OE has created and is using a new set of files whilst your old ones are still intact and recoverable.
