Holmesfield - wiggly white lines on the road?

There was a similar scheme in somewhere like Devon / Cornwall / Somerset a few years ago as I recall. These proved to be very good at reducing the speed of cars travelling through the area. It's a similar concept to schemes in Holland whereby they have removed the white line markings altogether. The logic behind it, which seems to work, is that drivers are forced to concentrate more and focus their attention which leads to reduced speeds. Seems a bit strange, but the unusual layout out the lines causes an element of confusion to the brain; this in turn leads to a reductio of speed and reduced casualities. When you consider the reaction from motorists to speed cameras, when they get caught for choosing to ignore the speed limit, it may be a less contoversial means to enforce speed limits.

Then again, it could be a mistake!

3. (of a sound) to rise and fall in pitch: the wail of a siren undulating in the distance.
