SHsheff
Driving through Holmesfield today en route to yet another Walk (Bakewell/Ashford today), we noticed that new solid white lines have been painted along the edges of the road - but they undulate! Now, this is clearly for a reason, but I've never seen it before. Is it to give the illusion that the road is narrower or more windy (as in winding, not as in wind, lol) than it is, to slow traffic down? In places the white lines are the standard 6" or whatever from the kerb, but at other places the lines must come in, oh I dunno, two foot or so towards the middle of the road. Was the white-line truck driver doing this after a liquid lunch? Is it going to be like this on other roads? Has anyone else noticed it? And, WHY? metalman
Wait a bit and probably the kerb will be built out into the road too to make a chicane.
Grissom
Maybe they went round some road kill or a car ? If so I guess they werent the guys that did these lines http://www.netraptor.org/humor/pictures/notmyjob.jpg
bandit
sound like standard traffic calming chevrons to me....
SHsheff
sound like standard traffic calming chevrons to me.... Maybe so - but there aren't any stripes or anything to fill in the 'gaps' inbetween the lines that veer towards the middle of the road and the kerbs, it's just these curious wavy lines undulating in and out along the road! If I happen to pass that way tomorrow I'll try to remember to take a photo. In fact, there's a good chance I'll have Grissom with me. He's the official Walking Group photographer. gemma86
I saw this the other day and wondered what on earth had gone on. I noticed a couple of them, on the side heading towards Sheffield, go around drains, but that doesn't usually warrant great big curves in lines. It's like something was stood there and they've gone around it.
Grissom
OK here are the pics I took : http://www.rtapper.plus.com/Wiggly%20Road%20markings%20at%20Holmesfield/index.html I'll have a pint of whatever the line men had during lunch that day
bennyboy
I have seen them before in other villages. The idea is that they confuse drivers and this makes them slow down. They have been successful in slowing drivers down in other places and they are cheaper than signs, cameras etc... I think they are a good idea, people drive really fast on that road.
