Bus Chicken: A game played at bus stops that you might not have noticed (yet)

Recommended Posts

I thought i should post this comment on a rather odd game ive noticed people playing at bus stops. Ive called it bus chicken and it goes a bit like this. You get to a bus stop and there are other people at the stop before you. The bus starts to approach the stop but nobody steps out and puts out there hand. The way this affects me is that I start to wonder wether anybody is catching the same bus so i start to edge forward and look at the other passengers to see if they will walk out too. Nobody does so I stick my hand out, get on the bus then realise that they all wanted the bus and ive just pushed to the front of the cue.

OK your probably thinking that im just deeply neurotic but ill explain a few extreme cases to illustrate. One day i decided to stay back, i was actualy going to work and not sticking out my hand would have ment being late for work but on this one occasion i wanted to see what would happen. The bus was right up close and this young bloke dived out, red faced and the bus had to slam on his brakes to stop (everyone at the stop got on). Ive played it since (never when i realy needed the bus) and have on a few occasions seen the bus go sailing past as nobody put out there hand (this is at a stop where only one bus stops). Ive been on one bus and saw it go past a stop with over 6 people and seen them all dive out AFTER the bus passed. My golden chicken award goes to a lady on the 69 route that i saw actualy step back as the bus approached and her child climbed out of her pram and ran toward the road with her hand out.

I Appreciate that it can be easily delt with by asking if anybody wants the bus, but its an interesting phenomenon. Its not just kids, ive played this game with old ladies/blokes, on very cold days and even seen people turn there backs to buses and then catch them.

I think the lady with her kid in the pram keeps the golden chicken for a while.

This regularly happens on some of the buses I get on, but once the bus has sailed past a lot of the people who are waiting start to swear at the bus.

Ive also been on buses that have had to slam the anchors on because no-one had stuck their arm out and then jumped out at it as it tried to go past. These people then generally proceed to have a go at the poor driver :loopy:
