S8 Blade
Going down the M1 today towards the M18 (and the opposite direction) and the speed cameras are bagged Almost makes you wonder if it was a waste of money installing the cameras, painting on the lines etc for just a couple of months. You can see lines on the M18 where the marker lines have been before and I just think... it must cost a fortune to install the cameras and set them up... to be taken away again in a few weeks! phawley
I'd like to bet they have made 10 times what it cost to install them, I'm not a big user of the motorway these days but it seems each time recently that i've used that stretch i've seen them flash someone. It's a safety thing though isn't it? If the roadworks are there for a month or a year that's how long the cameras are required. And they do appear to reduce the speed of traffic, and therefore presumably improve safety at the roadworks?
garryn
think they're temporary, but the mounts are permanent. If they make people think twice about going through contraflow at 70, I'm all for 'em

And they do appear to reduce the speed of traffic, and therefore presumably improve safety at the roadworks? Nope. Dft's own funded research shows increased number of accidents at motorway roadworks where speed cameras are installed. Can't place exact source at the mo, but will try later. Zamo
think they're temporary, but the mounts are permanent. If they make people think twice about going through contraflow at 70, I'm all for 'em People ignore speed reductions because most of the time there is nobody actually doing any work or there is no reason for the speed reduction! There is a stretch going north bound on the M1 (somewhere south of Chesterfield) that indicates a 50mph restriction but there is nothing there. What's more, this restriction has been there since I moved up here from London over 3 years ago! If you want people to observe these speed reductions then they need to have confidence that they are not been mislead or that they are un-necessary. If you cry wolf all the time then it's only your own fault if people stop believing what you tell them.
Till Man
My question is:- Why bother with the Gatsos? I travel up to 50,000 miles per year with work and notice that the signs that say that a set of roadworks is covered by a police "average speed check" are just as effective as using speed cameras, if not more so. If cameras are installed people pass a camera, speed up, and then slow down for the next one. If it an avarage speed check area everyone slows down and sets their cruise controls. Since none of us quite know how the average speed check thingies work, or what they look like, they could just be a sign and not real at all, or even something portable that they use from time to time and none of us would be any the wiser! Still, at least the Gatso on the A1 between Newcastle and Edinburgh that was hidden behind the "Welcome to Scotland" sign (in a 60 limit) has now been taken down! Cyclone
none of us - speak for yourself, I know exactly how they work, and I know what they look like. But I agree that they are more effective. Stackmonkey - I have to disagree, i looked up some figures and the rate of injury to road workers was greatly reduced when cameras were used. Although saying that, a great reduction in a very small amount is actually a small reduction in real terms.
Lazarus78
I was very grateful to see the bags over them tbh. Yes they reduce the speed of traffic etc but at the same time people speed up to them and then have to slam their brakes on. Personally I dont think they make the road any safer if anything its almost more likely to cause an accident. Im fed up of them as I have to travel down there to Doncaster each day. Cyclone
Safer for the workers, not safer for the drivers.
