SupraSteve
http://direct.gov.uk/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicleArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4022117&chk=b8LBY1 says... "The easy to use service will take you step by step through the transaction and a tax disc will be delivered to you within five working days." As Skatiechik says, failure to display a valid tax disc is an offence - but I'd plead innocence with anyone that stopped me (unlikely to happen), explain what has happened (should be easy to check that you've paid up via the new database) and would hope to 'get away' with it - after all at least you've paid and aren't dodging paying! It might turn up tomorrow anyway
Dicko
Police only report that your disc is out of date, they don't issue any fines for this. If you have renewed on line before the expiry i'm sure it will be ok.
pumatic
Any plod who pull you over will be able to query DVLA records to see that you have applied for tax renewal. They certainly are able to do you for failure to display, but probably wouldn't so long as your story checks out with DVLA records. Be very polite however. fairbrom
From what I've read you could be penalised. Having said that, the cops/VOSA/DVLA know that you've paid for a new disc and it's in the post, so I doubt you would be penalised. I would hope common sense would prevail...having said that, I can't find this scenario on the DVLA website...and having said that, do the cops/VOSA/DVLA know what common sense is? phawley
Cops can do an instant check to see if duty has been paid, problem is any traffic warden can issue you with a failure to display notice which is pretty hard to fight. Its happened many times to people when the disc has blown away or fallen off.
phawley
On a different note I went to pay mine this week (29th) and after queueing for 25 mins I was told that they could not tax it as the MOT runs out on the 30th. I thought that you only had to show a current MOT cert. Has anyone else had a similar experience and does anyone know if I was told correctly? Guest
I've got the same problem I've been in hospital following an operation and only just remember that my tax runs out tonight, so I've had to renew online. I just hope it comes by monday when I go back to work.

You were told correctly your mot certificate has to be valid on the date your licence comes into force i.e the first of the month.hth.
