Dog Training Classes (merged thread)

Do what Lotti did - and invite forumers' dogs to meet her :)

Ed was aggressive with other dogs, but now he's met a few in controlled circumstances, she says he was playing with another dog this weekend!

If she's a great one for running off, tie a washing line to her collar when running free, to act as a brake. Call her frequently and reward her. If she doesn't come, reel her in still calling to her, and reward her.

she just gets scared & then freaks other dogs out

We have her on an extendable lead at the moment, but the others can run free, it just doesn't seem fair on her

Brude has often been asked for his services in socialisation (probably because of his size) so if you want to give it a go... He's a determined little soul, who isn't put off easily ;)

Try the washing line. Extendable leads have tension, so she knows it's there, the washing line doesn't.

Brude is a nightmare on a lead. He goes deaf and takes all commands from the twinge of the lead. Off a lead he (more or less) listens. And if he doesn't, he gets his half choke thrown to nearby to distract him - like the plastic bottle and gravel method ;)

try a horse lunging reign, easier on the hand than washing line. we use these for our dogs as the husky that can be let off the lead is a very rare animal indeed. we dont like the flexi-leads as their toughness in the face of a Husky (capable of pulling 100KG) is debatable and ive seen a couple of nasty injuries caused to dogs from these (cheesewire springs to mind)

Hi

Does anyone know of any dog agility classes in Sheffield? I have taken Tia to dog training classes and she picked everything up within a couple of weeks so we stopped going, I feel ready for a bit of a challenge. The trainer said Tia would be brilliant at agility and I wouldn't mind having a go myself! Had a look on internet and can't find anything!

Daisy.x

Have a look at the clubs listed on the agilitynet website (soz as newbie can't post URL yet)

Like Tess667 I would not recommend North Derbyshire :gag:

Hi All,

Having just become an owner of a retired Greyhound i thought it might be good to get him some training, just the basic stuff nothing to fancy as he is retired he is about 6 now so not sure how much you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I was just wondering if anybody could reccomend any good classes around the Hillsborough area for dog obedience and very probably owner training as well.

Many thanks in advance

jamiexx

Hi Jamie,

The class I go to is a very laid back class that you'd probably get on well with - all positive methods of training. It's on Slinn St, Crookes not too far from you.

As far as his age goes. Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks was wrong! Eddy, my rescued dalmatian wasn't taught anything other than sit and paw by his previous owner. He's 11 1/2 years old and 3 months on obeys to sit, paw, other paw, beg, down and come.

Don't underestimate him - the fact is, an older dog is probably less likely to get distracted and therefore will learn quicker if anything!

Look up clicker training - that's how we teach Eddy.

How much is it?

I doubt we'd be able to come as it's quite far from us and we already go to training on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but I'd be interested!

Is it a course that you pay for a certain amount of weeks or does it matter if you miss a week in between?

Thanks

Can anyone give me some indication of the prices for training classes pls?

I've just 'obtained' a staffy pup and would like to train him, not looking for tricks and stuff, just obedience like stopping at roads, general 'sit' stuff etc ect.

Thanks

If you're just looking for basic obedience and good manners, there's a class run at St Tims Church Hall, Slinn St. Crookes.

They charge £2.50 per evening for an hour's class and they just focus on getting the dog to look at you when walking past other dogs, getting the dog to come when called, sit and down and stay... just the basics.

It's a nice friendly class and the instructor is good. When I get everything organised I'll hopefully be taking my eldest to help with his socialisation. Takara's past all the stuff they do now so it'll just be Eddy going with me.
