The Deep End pub in Hillsborough - to reopen as The Rawson Spring (Wetherspoon).

Recommended Posts

andy i agree, other pubs on (and just off west street) have survived....

but we're talking about a totally different night time economy!

these pubs are in the city centre, not residential suburbs with limited established drinking holes. these places are bolstered by passing trade, the student community, their local and non local regulars, and tourists.

at weekends, there are thousands of people in the city centre out socialising in pubs- can the same be said for hillsborough? no, apart from matchdays and how many of all of them actually go to the pub when they come for the football?

as for the take away boxes- not my fault, i take mine home and then put it in the blue bin when im done. if youre that bothered, you complain, anyway how do you know it all comes from there? what i object to is people urinating in the gennel next to my house- thankfully, that stopped when the deep end shut, but what were the council ever going to do about that? sweep them up?

and wetherspoons being the first to open a big pub on west street- you dont mean the swim inn? since when was that the first big pub on west street?

I'd love to hear some of the points you are going to put to the council.

I'd have hoped that common sense would prevail - not to sound harsh, but if someone moves close to a pub, I hardly think it's fair to start whining to the council about the problems of living near a pub.

Given that the premises were previously licensed, the applicants will surely just argue that there's a precedent?

I can only see that an objection to the extended licensing hours (past 23:00) might be given any real consideration. However, I think the same thing applies - if you moved near a pub and didn't expect this, then why should you spoil other's fun?

Exactly, if you dont like living near a pub why did you move close to so many :loopy:

Just because you dont eat out on a sunday doesn’t mean everyone else in h'boro dosent want to

Just because you dont drink hot drinks, real ale or stout doesn’t mean that other people dont

Stop kicking up a fuss the pubs where there along time before you, you chose to move near them :(

yep and if you read my post, i said this is what i would be appealing against.

wetherspoons will happen- thats taken as granted. i dont like it but ill have to live with it.

i just object to the late licensing part. being as the deep end didnt have that, its not a precedent.

theres no way i can stop wetherspoons getting the unit if they want it. but my first call tomorrow will be to the council to find out what i personally can do to make sure that my voice is heard to try and prevent them getting a late licence.

The Griffin in ecclesfield had it's licence removed due to complaints from the neighbours, the pub was there first, someone bought the old bank & turned the top floor in to a flat. After a couple of years complaining the pub got shut down. Don't think that because the pubs were there first that they are "safe" from complaints about nuisance behaviour! If people shout load enough in the right direction, things do get done.

Not all Wetherspoon's are the same. The Cambridge St one is really nice now, the Swim Inn is OK, Banker's Draught is still a bit of a dump though (though better than before). There is definiitely a market for decent real ale in the centre of Hillsborough. Often their beer is well-kept, sometimes it's less so but at least you know it'll be there.

The Deep End was never quite right in its last incarnation - often empty, which was ludicrous given its location. So I hope this will be the answer. Maybe they could open the frontage up to the tram platform a bit more and get a good range of customers.

But it'll be a pity to lose the live venue as the back bit had great potential. I've never been in a Wetherspoon anywhere that has had live music of any kind, so if they've definitely got it we've probably seen the last of that, which would be a great shame.

Im born and bred in Hillsborough now living up on wads park village and would love to see weatherspoons open up down the 'boro. I just wondered after reading all the posts etc what people up at woodseats thought to it all. Weatherspoons opened up there a few years ago along side other pub/takeaways and seem to be doing ok. Hillsborough and Woodseats are the same type of community in respect of housing, shops etc so maybe you woodseat folk could have a say

The point Phil makes about your choice of accomodation, was the next point I was going to make, surely anyone with commonsense knows if you live 40 feet from a pub front door, you can expect some problems.

Maybe do a little more homework about your chosen area next time you decide to change addresses.
