Luckily for me I never made it for the Sept 70 term, I do remember (does anyone else) having to make the trek from the youngsters bit of the school (Skoil) up to the main bit, was it for Friday morning assembly and that is when you would as a youngster get to see the feared Edwards, I didnt know much about him other than I didnt want to tangle with him. Anyone remember a little guy with jet black hair who loved playing pennies at lunchtime, his name was Frank Norman, and I used to skip school at lunchtime with Frank and visit this bombed out warzone that had a chip oil, and thats where my tanner (or was it 1/6d) that should have bought the lunch ticket (recall those). There were some very cool teachers amongst the ones that were close to a nervous breakdown. Does anyone recall, I think it might have been early 69 when another school, was it Burngreave, closed down and that meant that us 12/13 year olds had a load of 14/15 year olds from there descend upon us, and they were completely cracked roughnecks, I think I spent the second term learning how to fight. Studio 7 down in Attercliffe comes to mind, as does sneaking into Easy Rider which was x rated in a probably long demolished cinema not that far from Firth Park, anyone remember which one it might have been? I do remember being very proud that Joe Cocker who was on top of the pops was from Sheffield, and t'Grease Band. David Tate, Stewart Taylor (lipper) was my mate, and there were a couple of gals in the class who I was hot for!!! I lived on Abbeyfield Rd in Pitsmoor (I was born there too) dont quite now what goes on in Pitsmoor now, had a fight on the top of the double decker on the way home one day, with get this, a very tough very mean, and very strong black girl, who ended up taking her shoe off and whacking me on the skull with it, I think I got one good shot in and then jumped off the bus a bit quick :-)), who knows I probably deserved it.

The cinema in Firth Park was the Paragon (Sicey Avenue). Studio 7 was in the Wicker.

You all have vivid memories of Edwards, does anyone remember the old bus that was bought for school trips.

I only went on a couple of outings, and one was to go to Granville College to see what courses were available etc.

I remember going up the drive to the college, most of us hid on the floor we were so ashamed.

When the fund raising was done we thought it would be a coach, but it was some really old thing, looked like world war II vintage.

I remember it well it was an old rickety old thing. Was at a wedding at the weekend of a couple of old school friends and the discussion got around to whether there was a school horse at Hinde House. People thought me and Ian were mad when we said there was and that it used to live in a paddock with an old railway wagon as a stable. Anybody else remember it? Must have been around the late 60s early 70s

I can remember the cancer scare that was at hinde house due to asbestos if I recall ???

Possibly one of two events.

The Brightside Lane Warehouse Fire -National Carriers Depot(amongst others) December 14th 1984. Material from the fire was deposited on Wincobank and the school fields report.

Asbestos materials were reported and collected by specially protected teams.

Some years later there was a "statistically unusual" number of cancer deaths and serious illnesses in the area. Locally concern was expressed over the former landfill at the top of Fife Street. A specialist in cancer clusters from Leeds examined the cases and explained that no two cases were the same type of cancer but when questioned she did not rule out a common 'trigger'. When pressed further the professor suggested genetics as the commonest one around the country with lifestyle and industrial air pollution linked.

The professor suggested that lead pollution from the motorway should be a much greater concern to the locals.

both reports were nothing to do with the cancer scare at hh. the scare arose from the fabric of the building think it was asbestos panels under the windows. the school was closed for a time and the pupils attended the old carbrook school at attercliffe. there was a story about this in the sheffield star and a group set up to find out the cause a girl i went to school with set it up because an unusual pattern formed because some pupils were affected from the same year? will try to find the report later when i got time

I had Miss Gregorian for English, though she had trouble speaking it, she was rather feisty.

I remember the riot. It was about the school uniform, being predominantly grey. Old Edwards was colour blind, you see.

Does no one remember Mr Hill, head of Chantry and Mrs Merryweather (Merrylegs) the music teacher?

There was Mr Powell the chemistry teacher who bore a remarkable resemblance to Beaker from the Muppets and Mr Holmes the Physics teacher with the flat cap.

Mr Ridgeway was a bit harsh as I recall, but always fair. Mr Edwards was as weird as they come. Yes Miss Pitts was more attractive than Mr Eccersley for french.

I was at Hinde House from 69 to 76. I remember playing Mr Creakle from Nicholas Nickleby on the School float in the Lord Mayor's Parade and winning the Sir Stuart Goodwin Trophy. Saw a different side to Mr Ridgeway that day. He was so chuffed with us.
