SteveNeary   10 #1549 Posted April 22, 2010 Hi all - been an avid SF viewer for a good few months now so I thought I would join in the fun...especially so as I am currently doing up my terrace property in Walkley (first time buyer).  We have had quite a bit done so far (re-wire, new bathroom etc) but to add to it all our boiler packed up a couple of days ago.  We have had our first quote to supply and fit a new boiler (combi) and to have it replaced onto a different wall in our kitchen. Current pipe work and rads all ok - quote is for a Worcester Bosch unit. Came in at £1700. To the experts on here, does this sound reasonable?  Will be looking to get another couple of quotes before deciding who to go with so any further recommendations would be great.  First post done - hurrah!  Steve
 Share this content via...

From the price i imagine your installer wants to put in a 28i jnr greenstar. I like worcester but there are much better boilers on the market and worcesters build quality has suffered a bit recently. i don't like the plastic hydroblock, the alliminium heat exchanger and the straight through condensate trap which freezes in the winter.  I'd personally ask you to consider the Vaillant Ecotec plus 827 which is powerful enough for a terrace house and even at 27Kw has a good flow rate.  Another consideration as you are spending on a new boiler. Cash may be tight but make sure your system is flushed and a magnaclean is installed. Looks as though your first quote doesn't include a flush. With Worcester-Bosch as with most other manufacturers, your warranty will be invalid and your guarantee void...honest if it breaks down you will have to pay  I'm not doing domestic work at the moment but have passed lots of work on to both Steve (Corgigasman) and Micky ET. Both like me have been forum members for a long time and my customers have told me both steve and micky are solid, quality installers....... sum-sforum   10 #1554 Posted April 22, 2010 hi guys,  I do not know whether it is the right place to post my problem or not. I have a Baxi Combi boiler about 4-5years old and has started loosing pressure. When the heating is on the pressure is fine, but when heating is off and the water on pre heat pressure bar goes to zero. I keep having to use the valves to increase the pressure about every 2 days? when the pressure is zero, it also makes rattling noise which is very annoying and disturbing.  Please help and advice. citywide   10 #1555 Posted April 22, 2010 D.P.Roberts City Wide Heating Services Hi Sum-sforum, From what you've described it sounds likely that you may have a faulty expansion vessel on your boiler although it would have to be checked to confirm that. if that is the case it may need replacing or may simply need re pressurising. if you would like us to come and check it for you give me a call(Dan 07971 333023) and we could visit either friday morning or any time next week.  Gas safe registered, all work fully guaranteed, All engineers ex British gas with over 35 years combined experience. Complete-Heat   10 #1556 Posted April 22, 2010 City-wide is right, however you need a new expansion vessel. Re-pressurising the vessel wont cure the problem i'm afraid. The pre heat facility on your Baxi happens within the expansion vessel itself and the diaphragm within the hot water pre-heat assembly has broken down. Dan and Andy replaced my clapped out Gloworm boiler a couple of weeks ago and I would highly recommend them. They turned up when they said they would, and completed the job within the day so we weren't without heating.  They were efficient and did a great job for a great price. I'm always wary of getting people I don't know to do big jobs for me and always go with recommendations from others. These lads were spot on! SteveNeary   10 #1559 Posted April 23, 2010 Cheers guys, a ton more help than I had hoped for, really helpful thank you.  Complete-Heat, cheers for taking the time to post and help. The quote I received did include a power flush (sorry for not mentioning) but there was no inclusion of fitting a magnaclean...I will insist on this on all future quotes. I have since been in touch with the company and they would be happy to fit a Vaillant Ecotec plus 827 for the same price, they too said this was the best unit on the market currently. I only asked for a Bosch as I had heard so many others talk about them as the best thing going...  I will be getting in touch with the guys recommended on here recommended (Corgigasman, City wide etc) to get some other quotes before I go ahead and take the plunge...  Cheers again everyone.  Steve
 Share this content via...
monstercrab   10 #1560 Posted April 23, 2010 hiya steve, cant your current boiler be saved or have you decided you want a new boiler by choice or is the part needed for your old boiler no longer available, you seem to have paid out a lot of money on the property already, why not post what the problem is and maybe you could save some hard earned cash.
