we qualified for the old scheme, i cant remember what it was called. we were borderline on income grounds but dont get benefits, and on health grounds but we are not disabled. the rules are slightly different as we have a mortgage. we would like our old baxi solo swapping for a combi so we can just turn on a tap and get hot water instead of boiling the tank and some of it going cold if not used. i have recently had thoughs of getting a log burner for the house as i understand people with these are saving a fortune on their fuel bills. is there one with a back boiler that can do central heating and produce hot water? and how would this run alongside a combi boiler when the log fire is not needed in the summer? more info please.

As regard the solid fuel option it is possible to do but if you put that in and a combi it would cost you about 6-7K as you have to use secondary heat exchangers full system has to be copper etc you would probly be better with a system similar to yours with the tank, we have done two now and they were very interesting to do, kept me on my toes ! The most economical option would be to have a log burner installed which will heat your home a little and get a combi boiler in this should cost you around £3-4K

Hi, I've got a really old Thorne boiler and the pilot light has gone out. I've tried to re-light it and the pilot lights no problem but when releasing the gas valve the pilot is going out. Any advice on possible problem/ cost please

Some of the thorns are special thermocouples so budget around 75 and you won't be far wrong if it is as valve around 160 mark we should have both of these on van stock !

Steve is still around. He is working on a large contract at the moment and the terms prevent him from working on domestic.

Just found this thanks to a mod pointing me to it askng the same question. Still rather crappy he's just gone cold turkey on his previous without even suggesting who we should use as a replacement.

 

I've seen Micky mentioned a lot ( not that far from me either ).

We have a pretty old back boiler and fireplace that is clearly not in great condition.

 

i deperately want it to get thorugh winter, so i can arrange the money for a new combi boiler in the new year. however i feel it needs some TLC.

 

my great overiding fear is that i'll call one of you venerable tradespeople, who will take a look at it, and condemn it - leaving me in real trouble.

 

are there any amongst you who specialise in back boilers? I beleive it's an old baxi bermuda, though i stand to be corrected. it came with the house, and i expect it's at least 15 years old, but moer likely 20+

 

it lights up and fills the house with warmth every time - but outside of that, i know very little.

 

any advice will be very welcome.

for the OP, any reputable gas person on here would not condemn your back boiler unless it was "immediately dangerous". And in doing so only has your best interests at heart (your life).

 

The baxi Bermuda is in fact quiet a reliable back boiler but like any back boiler does need a regular service. the rear fins are prone to clogging up but a REALLY good clean is often all is that's needed to pass the flue analyser test. The burner pressure can also "drift" but this would also be adjusted during the service

 

the main problem is just how inefficient they are by todays standards, ALOT of heat does rise up the chimney even though they are quick to warm up both the house and owners.

 

I'm not on domestic appliances anymore but one of the guys will be here soon or will pm you to take a look and get you through this winter.

 

you are right in saving up for a new more efficient boiler.
