Sheffield City Council is inviting residents, workers, visitors, and businesses to help shape the future of the city centre through its new City Centre Access and Movement Plan. This initiative is part of a broader effort to transform Sheffield into a safer, more inclusive, and people-friendly city.

The plan aims to improve how people travel into and around the city centre, ensuring streets are welcoming and accessible for everyone. It will build on existing projects like Connecting Sheffield: City Centre, which begins construction in early 2025 and follow programmes such as improvements to Fargate, the Heart of the City II project and progress towards creating a new park at Castlegate.

Key upgrades include turning Surrey Street, Pinstone Street, and Charles Street into pedestrian-focused spaces designed to support local businesses and city life.

Supporting a Growing City

With nearly 20,000 new homes planned for the city centre in the coming years, the council says a modern, efficient transport network is essential. The City Centre Access and Movement Plan will guide how streets should look and feel, supporting the influx of new residents, businesses, and services.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said:

“Sheffield is transforming into a fantastic place to live, work, and enjoy. To match our ambitious plans, our streets must be safe and welcoming for everyone. We want to hear from people about how they use the transport system and what changes they’d like to see.”

How to Get Involved

The council is encouraging public participation through an online survey and drop-in events. Whether you live, work, study, or visit Sheffield, your input can help shape the city centre's future. Businesses are also urged to share their perspectives.

The survey can be completed on the Have Your Say Sheffield website: haveyoursay.sheffield.gov.uk/city-centre-access-and-movement-plan.

Drop-in sessions will provide more information and allow attendees to give feedback in person:

  • Thursday 12 December 2024, 10am–5pm, Winter Garden
  • Tuesday 17 December 2024, 10am–5pm, Winter Garden
  • Saturday 18 January 2025, 10am–5pm, The Moor Market

The council says it hopes the public’s ideas will help create a city centre that works for everyone while supporting Sheffield’s continued growth and development. Ensure you have your say, for your voice and views to count.
