Neither does having cars sat in traffic idling for hours a week.  It could be argued that a car going an extra mile or so but keeping a constant higher speed and not sat idling or stop starting every 5 seconds might overall be better for the environment.

Besides, the point I was making in response to the other poster was that there already is a massive dual carriageway system nearby which people could use.   Simply ploughing through people's residential streets and building another one isn't the answer.

but firstly you have the congested meadowhead island , then you get into traffic at townend  and then say city road it will after all that mileage cause problems, re-the tram extend it from gleadless down the parkway, past st james or via jordanthorpe, batemoor, lowedges that would help people with a city option and as theres cash available it could be done, but just have to face it to many cars/vans on the roads these days.

Where? This kind of massive infrastructure enterprise is always state-funded, and the current administration claims they haven't got any - although with their dreams to nationalise everything, I can kind of believe that.

You would make an excellent MP, with that response.

I believe Rio de Janeiro has solved the problem with a cable car system carrying commuters from the favelas over to the centre of the city for work.

I'm not saying it would necessarily work in Sheffield, but I mention it to demonstrate a bit of outside the box thinking, which is something we need more of.

Meanwhile the only answer is to take out some of the housing and shops to widen the road, or build a new road behind the existing one to take some of the traffic. Same problem with houses etc, but that's never stopped the council in the past (for the greater good...)

Maybe Elon Musk would like to come along and build his underground vacuum tube system, in situ, to demonstrate it to the world.

Of course the most realistic answer is to have a tip top cheap, clean, efficient, co-ordinated and plentiful public transport system.... Oh yes, I remember Sheffield had one of those, but the Tories and posh types on that side of town insisted it was scrapped, because "They didn't use it, so shouldn't have to pay for it"....

And when no-one uses it, so it just bleeding cash, are you going to put your hand in your pocket to bail out SYMCA?

By the way, when Sheffield  City Council ran the bus network, it was with old, smelly, badly maintained vehicles, which is why, when the Traffic Commissioners did a snap inspection of the fleet, they pulled in excess of 50% of them off the road immediately due to them being a safety hazard.

The problem as I see it is: -

The flow of traffic is effected by all of the following;

There are too many bus stops and too many buses of the same number (can be 2 of No.25 to Bradway at the same time for example)!

There is isn't enough room for a bus to pull into a bus stop, therefore stopping the flow of traffic!

There are too many sets of pedestrian crossings!

There is a busy school and these days, most pupils are brought to and from in a car!

What on earth are they doing at the moment and will it improve it (doubtful).

My answer other than a time machine is for less traffic, which is not going to happen!

They could reduce the number of buses - which would increase the number of their customers to complain....

They could reduce the number of crossings - but old Elf & Safety won't allow that....

They could increase the sizes of the bus stops to allow buses to pull in properly instead of being stuck out...

We could all start using other routes and rat runs - which will then densly over use these roads....

It is a catch 22 situation and a vicious circle and totally frustrating for all!

What we're looking at is the inevitable result of 70+ years of car-first transport planning.

as a regular shopper in Woodseats, one of my main criticisms is that there aren't *enough* pedestrian crossing points!

Really? There's one every 100 yards. There's even two in the space of 50 yards close to Asda!
