Even more than that, manipulation of social media feeds through TikTok, Facebook, Twitter etc. Certain organisations hold immense amounts of data about people which can be used to influence the way people think, behave and more importantly in a democracy,  vote.

Correct, look at the sort of things people are saying about the Musk/Trump connection

But back to the result which led to this thread. A ten-vote majority:

a. is tiny, even in a local election;

b. might have led to a Reform UK win had any other party in that part of the political spectrum not been standing; and

c. above all else, should show to the electorate that every vote really counts.

This should be a wake up call to all the main political parties, whether you like them or not , people are now siting up and are starting to take notice of the Reform party, they are certainly growing , the question is why ?

Because people are fed up of being ignored by the main two parties. If you look at any poll where the public is asked what the main issues are that need tackling, immigration is either top of the list or in second place. Starmer released his list of pledges the other day, and there wasn't a single mention of immigration.

If Elon Tusk pumps his money into funding Farage and Reforms shot at the next General Election, it's gonna be game over for the democratic process in the UK. We'll go the same way as the USA with micro manipulation of the electorate and a high probability of a populist, extreme right government which will further benefit big business and the wealthy in society. Society will be even more polarised and unpleasant for all.

Correct, as pointed out a few posts above

None of this having anything to do with a local council by election result of course.....

It certainly has. Some people are worried by how close the result was and are concerned by how well Reform have done and will probably do in future elections. And they are right to be worried.

No it isn't, it might be for you, but it isn't for most other people. Top of the list is the cost of living crisis and the state of the NHS.  The problem is that people vote for themselves and not only that, most of the electorate fail to realise that their opinions are unlikely to be their own, but the opinions of the people behind and in the media. Thus the current status quo remains. If you think your life would improve under another party other than the main two, you've got another thing coming. Besides, politicians are not there to do your bidding. Believe it or not, they are there to try and make society fairer for everyone, or at least they should be. They develop policies and then the electorate decide who to vote for.

There's just so many things wrong with that post. Politicians aren't there to do our bidding? They are there to serve the wishes of the people who elected them, not to make 'society fairer' as you claim.

And here's a recent poll which shows addressing immigration is the second highest priority;
