Author Phil Rickman has died

Phil Rickman died yesterday.  I'm stunned.  He was one of my very favourites authors; I've been reading his work for over twenty years, since I discovered his Merrily Watkins series.

If you're at all interested in spooky tales, folklore or a damn fine mystery, (or Nick Drake), do read the Merrily Watkins books.  Or check out earlier stories like Crybbe and The Man in the Moss, if you like your ghosts with more bite.

RIP Phil.  So many tales left untold.

I like these things. How does Nick Drake fit in?

One of the main characters is Lol Robinson, a musician.  His inspiration is Nick Drake, and the man and his work feature in the series from time to time.

Lol's songs mentioned in the novels made their way to CD, when Rickman, Allan Watson other musicians recorded them as Hazey Jane II.  Some background to be found here.

I see this was filmed as a 3-parter in 2015, and amazingly still on BitTorrent. Could be fun.

I was really looking forward to this.  Alas it... wasn't entirely terrible.  Perhaps those who come to it without knowing the series will enjoy it more, but I thought it was miscast and the story far too buggered about with.  I couldn't watch it all.

The novel is truly excellent, and genuinely disturbing in places.

Scritch scratch...
