Not going to university. I was so unhappy in The Convent High School For Girls that I left early. If my parents had left me in Shirecliffe school I would have gone.

I, like you pattricia never got chance to go to university when I was 18.
Did get accepted later in life however when I was married with two children.

It was hard financially but we’ll worth it.

Never forget the expressions on the faces of the youngsters in my group when this ‘old bloke’ got the best marks in our first written assignment. Perhaps they learned a lesson then that experience counts for a lot in life and you’re never to old to learn!😀

What kind of degree did you take ? I was top in English in school so would have taken an English Literature degree I think. My parents were working class and didn’t know anything about how to apply to University.

Another thing I regret from my past was turning a footballer down. I was at The Locarno dancehall one Friday night. This man came up to me and said he couldn’t dance but would I mind sitting down with him on the seats surrounding the dance floor. I thought it was strange that all these men were coming up to him asking for his autograph. He said he couldn’t take me for a drink as he was playing football the next day. I said “ Oh, do you play in Longley Park “ He said “ No I play for Sheffield Wednesday.” He said you can come tomorrow and get in free”  I said “ No thanks, I don’t like football “ !       Big regret on my part !

I would have liked to have been able to talk to my grandparents about growing up in Sheffield during the interwar years, their experiences of WWII, and of Sheffield in the 50s and 60s.  We were never a family to do much in the way of talking to each other; I wish someone had done something about that, too.

A BEd at Leeds and then a career in teaching.

My parents also were working class and I’m sure didn’t know a great deal about education.

I do know that a few of my peers, the ones I have contact with, have done very well for themselves since leaving secondary school. One is a pilot and another a director of a dozen companies.

You might have missed a bullet there pattricia.

You have done very well. What does BEd mean ?  What subject did you teach ?
