RJRB Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Intended to be a memory jogger for petrol heads and average joes. Most of my working life I have gone through the gamut of Company cars ,mainly Fords and Vauxhall’s.Later Saab’s,BMWs . Never went for a Merc,or even an Audi Quattro when I had the opportunity, although that was a car I would have loved when younger. Anyway my first car was an Austin A40 countryman costing £150 that gave me a freedom beyond my wildest dreams and took me to Devon,Wales,Scotland and many a run into Derbyshire. Many a bump start from upper Walkley down the hill and messing about with plugs ,points and distributors. I was never mechanical minded but my brother in law was always on hand. Finally parted with it to a mate with a spare gear box in the boot because I could not get first and reverse which made me very careful about where I parked. He actually gave me £40 a couple of months later having replaced the gear box and sold it on. 1

Anything with the A series engine gets my vote (got one from an Ital under my work bench now ) Controversial I preferred the Marina / Ital to Ford's Escort (even better if the 1800 B series were in it. ) Merc's love the things. BMW's certainly got better but hated them with a passion until recently. Cars I've owned, where to start? Easy Reliant Regals bought and sold them still have a few . Favourite driving car I've owned, Vauxhall Senator, favourite classic I've owned LHD MK111 Zephyr (in Pink ) Favourite modern Classic, Chrysler PT Cruiser (built in Rock 'N' Roll ) Driven: now that's a different kettle of fish. Returned so many customers cars after having been repaired I invented a game called "Driven one of them" annoys the Hell out of the kids 🙃. Big saloon cars are my thing Two I have driven stand out, Audi S6 Auto estates luv em, and one I'd have tomorrow a 4ltr Australian Fairlane Hearse that was great sideways around roundabouts . Tell me that's not 'Gorgeous'. Can smell the Formaldehyde from here 😀. 1

crookesey Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I well recall Sunday mornings in the 60/70’s, practically every car bonnet open with everyone fishing about in the engine compartment of their car. No such activity required these days, something that has changed for the better. 🤙
Al Bundy Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) Bought a lovely yellow Triumph Dolomite about 20 years ago when I lived in London. Everyone loved it, but it would never start on a cold morning making me late for work on numerous occasions. I had it around 12 months, then it let me down at traffic lights at Clapham Common, caused a proper traffic jam. Sold it the weekend after and bought a Vespa scooter, best decision I've ever made!! "I'll have a look at your points - gi'us a packet of Woodbines" has now been replaced with "it'll have to go on't machine, that 'll be £50 sir"

A friends brother is currently racing an E reg A 40 Farina in classic car races, I've seen it on his trailer. Most memorable car was Ford Cortina 2L GXL K reg., with vinyl roof, best motorway car I've had. Bought it from a chap near top of Whitehouse Lane in 1981/2. Edited January 22 by carosio
Prettytom Posted January 22 Posted January 22 My worst car was an MG Midget. Steered like the Titanic. Let’s say that the starting was intermittent. I finally lost patience with it when I had a total brake failure going down Long Lane in Loxley. My favourite car was an Audi A3 Quattro. Superglued to the road it was.
