One of the most helpful things to allow scammers and rogues of all kinds to do as they like,  was when they allowed people to withhold their number.

That's like allowing motorists to have blank number plates.

If we knew everyone's number when they rang us,  things should be much different.

Put that together with a system that quickly and efficiently takes action and we could really make a difference.

I’ve had many a possible scam call where the number wasn’t withheld, however they are impossible to contact on them.

That's because they allow computers to make mass calls.

That also should be stopped.

Technology is making life easier for the rogues than it is for the public and  does anyone care ?????????????????

Giving us the choice of barring withheld numbers would still be a very good start.

A security system which actually did something about rogue phone calls would be even better.

As always,  it just needs a will to deal with things instead of concentrating simply on,   PROFIT.

Don't try and call them back. That's another scam they use. They can charge very high premium rates for the call. I don't use a landline but on my mobile I set a £5 limit on calls (Unlimited calls in my plan) Premium rate not included.

As for withheld numbers. I can't set my phone to ignore them because a good 80% of calls from the NHS use withheld numbers. I'm not sure why they do it. The GP surgery and both Sheffield hospitals aren't secret societies as far as I know.

There has been some government cyber cime "studies" https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023
but no statistics regarding local cyber crime figures which make me think it isn't being reported as crime https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/south-yorkshire-police/sheffield-central-and-north-west/?yourlocalpolicingteam=about-us&tab=crimemap

These are not victimless crimes but are hidden behind closed doors in homes, businesses and charities that carry the burden.
It is simply not good enough with our local authorities letting this happen to  vulnerable people who find it difficult to interpret whether the intentions are good or malicious.
We have been let down very badly by those in charge who do not have a grasp of the harm that it does and quite openly are victim blaming by saying, you should have known, or you've not kept your computer up to date.
There needs to be adequate consequences to these new crimes and to crimes that will develop in the future with digital communications.

Pierogi is good. As well as being informative for people on scams and how they are done. It can also be very funny when he gets a bit of revenge.

I was in Santander's branch on Fargate mid December at the counter when an old couple walked up to the next counter to announce that they'd checked their  account online & discovered it had been emptied.

Before I walked away from my dealings I heard the Santander worker ask them if they'd shared their bank details with anyone?

Sadly it happens.  You have to remember the golden rules, NEVER share your account or debit card details with anyone AND your bank will NEVER call you to ask to move money to another account.

I had a phonecall from someone telling me I was entitled to £7,500 . I acted excited and thanked him and told him to post me a cheque through . Should have heard him stuttering ,trying to tell me it doesn't work like that .😀
