Runningman Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Have you cleaned a family gravestone ? What did you use ? What shouldn't you use ? Your help please !
*Wallace* Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 (edited) If it’s stone and it’s got moss etc on it something like Wet and Forget worked in with a brush should help, there are other cheaper versions of W and F but it is good. Edited December 28, 2023 by *Wallace*
Annie Bynnol Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 What is the stone? Is polished? Inlaid? Everything - very weak colourless detergent and toothbrush-rinse thoroughly. Never use chemicals like, vinegar, bleach, patio cleaners or abrasives 15 minutes ago, *Wallace* said: If it’s stone and it’s got moss etc on it something like Wet and Forget worked in with a brush should help, there are other cheaper versions of Wand F but it is good. Never, ever use patio cleaners- they may do a good initial job but they will destroy 'inlay'(eg on granite) and be absorbed into slate, marble, limestone, composite etc. then leach out to will create far worse permanent stains!
El Cid Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 I just used kitchen plastic brush and a spray.

crookesey Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 IMHO the stone should age in line with the deceased’s tenure. 1

Runningman Posted May 13 Author Posted May 13 Resurrecting this thread I started. I am attempting to clean the gravestone of my paternal grandparents The stone is typical of the thousands of Victorian stones in Sheffield Cemeteries, curved top, stands around 5ft tall. The first inscription on the stone was for what would have been an Uncle of mine who died as a child in 1896 What type of stone are they, polished gritstone out of Derbyshire or what ? Today I used a recommended substance, HG Kitchen - Natural Stone Worktop Cleaner purchased from B&Q No good for what I require Will now try Wallace's suggestion, Wet and Forget and let you know the outcome.
