Is the old railway line the path that starts at Meadowhall Travelodge and runs behind the Blackburn Industrial Estate and then parallel with Wooley Wood Road to Ecclesfield Industrial Estate? I did that walk once, was nice and surprisingly flat! You didn't find that bridge scary as a child? Do you mean the one that's near where The Foundry pub used to be? Morning Irene, not a very nice one! Yes, its the old railway line that used to carry coal up to the old coking plant at Thorpe Hesley.(long gone) As you say a very flat walk from Wincobank to Ecclesfield. If the weather is nice, I take my car down to Wincobank and run all the way to Ecclesfield and back, about 5/6 miles, can't manage the hills anymore.. The bridge I'm on about, Not the Foundry pub one! If you start at Wincobank and walk along Ecclesfield Rd. about half a mile, on your left hand side is the bridge I was referring too. (commonly known as the Basket Bridge) very popular back in the day for the Arthur Lee employees. No we didn't find the bridge scary, us Shiregreen mob were hard. The Thames-Clyde express used to thunder past at 3-30 pm. we used to put an old penny on the line, when we retrieved it, it was as big as a bin lid. Happy daze Irene......
 Share this content via...

I did last night, it's certainly one for adrenaline junkies. I was suspended 50 feet in the air with merely 4 foot of metal railing to stop me falling on to the bypass. I wonder what do the locals think, do you still find it nerve-wracking or are you used to it? I looked up on Google, apparently it dates back to the 1960s but little more info is available. I reckon there must have been some accidents on there over the years. It's a good job I didn't have my high heels on, one trip and I could have toppled over on to the motorway! I've never seen a railing so low on such a high bridge. Just off fishing with my mate swainsy ....the mind boggles ? Yes crossed that bridge many times walking home from Dallas bar 🍸 😀
 Share this content via...

I played on Basket Bridge many times when I lived at Shiregreen.
 Share this content via...

To run 5 miles too! The basket bridge used to lead to where the gas container was IIRC.
 Share this content via...

No Irene, the gas containers were in Wincobank. The "Basket Bridge" was further up Ecclesfield Rd. it led into the Arthur Lee works. It must have been a public highway, cus you could walk through, crossing the railway line, and coming out where the long gone Crown public house was. Adjacent to the bridge is a footpath that leads through Woolley Woods to the Golf course... Incidentally, the bridge was in Sheffield, the other side is Rotherham.
 Share this content via...

There's no need to use large words when singularly unloquacious and diminutive linguistic expression can just as succinctly convey the intent of my utterance. 2
 Share this content via...
