bassett one   #1 Posted July 18 read today that major citys and the whole country is to import foreign labour such as brickies, joiners ect . and the goverment is inviting them due to a shortage and they can charge upto 20% less than our trades people,is that fair? why have we got unemployed ,can they not be trained? so we left europe and said we wont invite workers and now we are begging labourers ,farm worker and now builders ect ,while we still have huge unemployment it seems odd ,why can we not learn people how to pick fruit or become joiners, electricians ect? It's reported in The Guardian too and was on the Beeb's lunchtime news.  This would perhaps be better as part of the consequences of brexit thread, since it's caused by that and the effects are not limited to Sheffield.  I don't have a problem with them bringing in people where there is a shortage (as NJ mentions, it takes time to properly train people). They should be paid the going rate though and the companies employing them should have to pay a temporary foreign worker tax for each one they employ to encourage them to train and employ locals.
 Share this content via...

Anna B   #11 Posted July 18 (edited) We have been neglecting to train decent tradespeople in this country for years. Companies say they can't afford to do it, so used to get cheaper labour from abroad. Government schemes are totally inadequate in comparison, and are often age limited, so not offered to many unemployed.  Parents seem to want all their children to go to University in spite of the cost, rather than learn a trade, although a decent plumber, electrician etc can earn good money - often more than a graduate for whom there are not enough well paid jobs.  English snobbery at it's finest.  Edited July 18 by Anna B 3
 Share this content via...
