Has anyone noticed the rats at The Francis Newton on Clarkehouse Road?

I saw one running in and out of the bushes, it was most unphased by people passing by. I was glad we were not sat on the tables outside. I couldn't bear the thought of one biting my ankle!

There is also the serious concern of the risk of Weil's Disease! I hope they keep the kitchen door closed.

Rats are everywhere, especially places were there’s food.

Im not really sure that seeing one rat means the pub has a ‘problem’?

Also leptospirosis is pretty rare in the UK, and not actually exclusive to rats. You’re really not likely to catch it from a Wetherspoons beer garden.

“How you get leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is spread in the pee of infected animals – most commonly rats, mice, cows, pigs and dogs.

You can get leptospirosis if:

  • soil or freshwater (such as water from a river, canal or lake) that contains infected pee gets in your mouth, eyes or a cut – usually during activities like kayaking, outdoor swimming or fishing
  • you touch an infected animal's blood or flesh – usually from working with animals or animal parts

It's very rare to get leptospirosis from pets, other people or bites”

The old water boards always had a big pest control budget to keep the numbers of rats in check.

Upon being privatised,  the first thing they all did to save money was  massive cutbacks on pest control.

They do tend to be seen around eateries, hotels etc. but are actually everywhere now.

Most rats won’t come near people anyway

It's true, rats are everywhere. Wherever there is a regular food source and somewhere to nest they will thrive.  London Road, West Street around the rear of any food outlets you will see them, especially after dark.

Pest control is futile, unless it is bolstered by proper food waste and refuse control.   I expect our SCC Environmental Services are kept extremely busy these days?
